British citizens do not need a visa to enter Vatican City; entry is via Italy, and as a UK passport holder you can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay rules that Italy applies at its borders.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area (Vatican City has no independent border control and is only accessible through Italy)
  • No visa or ETIAS currently required for UK citizens visiting for tourism or business of up to 90 days (ETIAS pre-authorisation is expected to apply to Schengen entries, including those transiting Italy to reach the Vatican, once the system goes live)
  • Proof of onward travel and accommodation may be requested by Italian border officials
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay
  • No photo or biometric enrolment required purely to visit the Vatican as a day visitor
  • Travel (and medical) insurance is strongly recommended for the Italy/Schengen leg of the trip

Visa types

  • Visa-free Schengen short stay (via Italy): free, granted on arrival in Italy, up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, covers tourism, pilgrimage visits and business meetings
  • There is no separate "Vatican visa" — all entries are controlled by Italian/Schengen rules since the Vatican has no independent immigration checkpoint
  • Special access passes (not visas) are needed only for specific purposes, such as press credentials for Vatican events or Swiss Guard/clergy appointments, arranged directly with the relevant Vatican office

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, which includes the days you spend in Italy before or after visiting the Vatican
  • No work permitted under this visa-free allowance
  • Entry to Vatican City itself (St Peter's Square, the Basilica, the Museums) has its own security checks and dress code but no passport/visa control, since it is reached on foot from Rome
  • Keep track of your cumulative Schengen days if you are combining the Vatican visit with wider travel in Italy or other Schengen countries

Fees & processing time

  • Entry to Italy/Schengen as a UK visitor: no visa fee, processed at passport control within minutes
  • Vatican Museums and Basilica dome entry have separate ticket fees (unrelated to immigration), typically EUR 20 to EUR 30 for the Museums and small supplements for the dome climb
  • No VFS/BLS application is needed for a standard tourist visit
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, a low-cost online authorisation (around EUR 7) will be required before travel to Italy, processed within minutes to a few days

  • Base your passport-validity and day-count planning on your overall Schengen trip, not just the Vatican portion
  • Book Vatican Museums and Basilica dome tickets online in advance to skip long queues, especially in peak season
  • Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) — this is enforced strictly at St Peter's Basilica regardless of visa status
