What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa application or forms required for stays under 90 days
  • Proof of onward or return travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, rental confirmation, or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, generally around EUR 100 per day or EUR 900 minimum for a stay, as sometimes checked at the border
  • Travel health insurance not mandatory for UK nationals but recommended
  • No biometrics or photos needed since no visa application is involved

Visa types

  • No short-stay visa required for UK tourists, business visitors, or family visits up to 90 days
  • National long-stay visa (D visa) - required for stays over 90 days, work, study, or the Spain non-lucrative visa route for retirees/remote workers; applied for at the Spanish Consulate in London, Manchester, or Edinburgh
  • Digital Nomad visa - for remote workers wanting to stay longer, also applied for in advance through a Spanish consulate

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, calculated across the whole Schengen Area, not per country
  • No employment permitted during a visa-free stay
  • Border officers can request proof of funds, accommodation, and return travel
  • The EU's ETIAS travel authorisation is being phased in for visa-exempt travellers including UK nationals - check gov.uk for the current mandatory start date, as it has been delayed multiple times
  • Overstaying can lead to fines, deportation, and a Schengen-wide entry ban

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-free short stay
  • ETIAS, once mandatory, is expected to cost around EUR 7 for most adult applicants, with approval usually within minutes, valid 3 years
  • National D visa fee (if applying for a longer stay) is approximately EUR 80, with processing of around 1 month through the consulate
  • No VFS/BLS fee applies to the standard short-stay route

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Keep track of your cumulative days across all Schengen countries visited in the past 180 days to avoid accidentally overstaying
  • Carry proof of accommodation and return travel, as Spanish border checks for UK (non-EU) passports have become more thorough post-Brexit
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, apply a few days ahead of travel even though approval is usually fast
  • If planning a long stay, such as the popular non-lucrative visa for retirees, start the consulate application several months in advance as demand is high
  • Get passport stamps checked carefully on both entry and exit, since under-stamping has caused day-count disputes for some travellers
