What you need

  • UK passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds, German border guards historically reference around EUR 45 per day as a guideline, although checks are inconsistent
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended
  • No biometrics for visa-free entry; passport stamped on entry and exit
  • Once ETIAS launches, a short online pre-travel form and small fee will be required

  • German national D-visa: for stays over 90 days, study, or job-seeking purposes; applied for at the German Embassy in London
  • EU Blue Card / work visa: for skilled employment, arranged in advance with a German employer

  • No VFS or agency fee applies for the short-stay visa-free entry itself

  • Keep proof of accommodation and return tickets accessible, especially when travelling by Eurostar or ferry where document checks can be more detailed

  • Register for ETIAS as soon as it is live, ideally at least 96 hours before travel
  • If driving, carry your vehicle registration (V5C) and insurance documents, as these are sometimes checked alongside passports at land borders
