What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed visa application (online form on eservices.immigration.go.tz, or paper form if applying on arrival)
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host details)
  • Yellow fever certificate only required if arriving from or having transited a yellow-fever-endemic country
  • Passport-style photo (digital upload for the online route; a printed photo can speed up the on-arrival process)
  • No biometrics required for a standard tourist visa, though fingerprints may be captured at the airport
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended, not legally mandatory

Visa types

  • Single-entry tourist visa: USD 50, valid for a single stay of up to 90 days
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa: USD 100, valid 12 months
  • Transit visa: USD 30, for passing through to a third country
  • Business visa: USD 50-100 depending on single/multiple entry, requires an invitation letter from the Tanzanian host company

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar), and major land/sea border posts
  • Queue at the visa desk before immigration, complete a short form, pay the fee in USD cash (crisp notes recommended) or by card where accepted
  • Processing on arrival is typically 10-30 minutes depending on queue length
  • Applying in advance via eservices.immigration.go.tz is recommended to skip the arrival queue - approval usually takes 2-3 working days and the approval letter is shown on arrival instead of completing paperwork on the spot

  • Single-entry tourist visa: USD 50 (cash USD preferred on arrival; card payment available online)
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa: USD 100
  • No separate VFS/BLS agency fee - fees are paid directly to Tanzania Immigration
  • On-arrival processing: usually under 30 minutes
  • Online pre-approval: 2-3 working days standard; no official express option

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply online 1-2 weeks ahead if you want to avoid the arrival queue, especially during peak safari season (June-September)
  • Carry exact USD cash in good condition - worn or old notes are sometimes refused at the border
  • A common rejection reason is an invitation letter or accommodation proof that doesn't match the stated trip purpose - keep documents consistent
  • If combining Tanzania with Kenya and/or Rwanda, ask about the East Africa Tourist Visa, which can be cheaper for multi-country trips
  • Extensions can be arranged at the Immigration Department headquarters in Dar es Salaam before the visa expires
