South Africa Visa for United Kingdom Citizens 2026

British citizens can visit South Africa visa-free for up to 90 days per calendar year for tourism or business; only a valid passport with blank pages is required, no visa needed.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure date from South Africa, with at least 2 completely blank visa pages (not just endorsement pages)
  • No visa application or supporting documents required to be submitted in advance
  • Proof of return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay
  • If travelling with children under 18, South Africa requires an unabridged birth certificate for the child (a long-standing but still enforced requirement)
  • No biometrics or photos needed for visa-free entry
  • Travel health insurance recommended but not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism, family visits, or short business trips up to 90 days per calendar year
  • Business visitor's visa - only needed if undertaking paid work or activities beyond standard business meetings; applied for at the South African High Commission in London
  • Study visa / work visa / long-stay relative's visa - all require advance application through VFS Global in London for stays or activities beyond the visa-free terms

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per visit, within a maximum of 90 days total in any calendar year for UK passport holders
  • No employment allowed under the visa-free entry category
  • Border officials may ask for the unabridged birth certificate for any accompanying minor, so carry an original or certified copy
  • Entry can be refused if passport pages are insufficient, even with 90 days of validity remaining
  • Extensions beyond 90 days must be requested in person at a Department of Home Affairs office before the visa-free period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry
  • Extension of stay application fee is approximately ZAR 1,520 (around USD 85), processed in 4-8 weeks through Home Affairs
  • Business visitor's visa, if required, costs around GBP 40-50 and takes 5-10 working days to process through VFS Global London
  • No general VFS/BLS fee applies for the standard visa-free route

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Always carry the unabridged birth certificate for any child travelling with you - this is the single most common cause of entry problems for UK families
  • Check your passport has at least 2 fully blank pages before departure, as airlines may deny boarding otherwise
  • Keep a copy of your return ticket and accommodation details accessible for the immigration desk
  • If you've visited South Africa earlier in the same calendar year, track your cumulative days to avoid exceeding the 90-day annual limit
  • For extensions, apply at a Home Affairs office well before your current permit expires, as processing can take weeks
