UK citizens need a visa to enter Russia — apply through an accredited visa centre with an invitation or tourist voucher; standard processing is about 20 working days and fees run from roughly GBP 100 to GBP 160 depending on entry type.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed online visa application form via electronic-visa.kdmid.ru, printed and signed
  • An invitation: a tourist voucher/confirmation from a licensed Russian tour operator or hotel, or a business/private invitation registered with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Travel health/medical insurance valid in Russia for the full duration of the trip, minimum cover USD 30,000
  • One passport-style photo, 35mm x 45mm, white background, no glasses or headwear
  • Biometrics are not routinely required for Russian visas but some application centres may ask for fingerprints
  • Proof of onward/return travel and, for some categories, proof of sufficient funds

Visa types

  • Tourist visa - single entry, valid up to 30 days, requires a tourist voucher, fee from about GBP 100
  • Business visa - single, double or multiple entry, valid 90 days to 1 year depending on category, requires a business invitation, fee from about GBP 140
  • Private/Homestay visa - requires an invitation registered by the host with Russian migration authorities, validity matches the invitation

How to apply

  • Obtain an invitation/voucher first - this is mandatory before applying
  • Complete and submit the electronic application form at electronic-visa.kdmid.ru
  • Book an appointment at the Russian visa application centre (operated via VFS Global in the UK) or the Consular Section in London/Edinburgh
  • Submit passport, printed application, invitation, insurance, photo and fee in person
  • Standard processing takes around 20 working days; express processing (3-4 working days) is available for a higher fee
  • Collect the passport in person or by courier once the visa is issued

  • Tourist single-entry visa: around GBP 100-120 (approx USD 125-150)
  • Business multiple-entry visa: around GBP 140-160 (approx USD 175-200)
  • Visa centre service fee: approximately GBP 30-40 on top of the consular fee
  • Standard processing: up to 20 working days
  • Express processing: 3-4 working days for an additional fee of roughly GBP 50-70

Tips for United Kingdom travelers
