Nigeria Visa for United Kingdom Citizens 2026

UK citizens need an e-Visa to Nigeria for tourist or business purposes — apply online at https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/; typical tourist visa fee USD 100 and processing about 2–5 working days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry into Nigeria, with at least 1 blank page for visa stamping.
  • Specific forms: Nigeria e-Visa online application form via https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/; no DS-160 or VAF1A; no pre-application at a consulate is required.
  • Financial proof: Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay; provide bank statements for the last 3 months or a formal bank letter; there is no fixed public minimum amount, but demonstrate funds equivalent to your planned stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Confirmed hotel booking or invitation letter from a Nigerian host; round-trip or onward travel ticket.
  • Photo spec: Recent color passport photo with white background; for upload, use a digital image around 600x600 px; printed photo should be 35x45 mm; not older than 6 months; head centered.
  • Biometrics: Yes; biometric data is captured as part of the online process; you may be asked to visit a biometrics center if required by the portal or upon entry with the e-Visa printout.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory; recommended to have coverage for medical emergencies during travel.

  • Tourist e-Visa (Tourist) — Official name: e-Visa (Tourist); Validity: Up to 6 months from issue date; Max stay per visit: Up to 90 days; Entry: Single entry; Approximate fee: USD 100 (NGN equivalent displayed on portal).
  • Business e-Visa (Business) — Official name: e-Visa (Business); Validity: Up to 6 months from issue date; Max stay per visit: Up to 90 days; Entry: Multiple entries (where applicable); Approximate fee: USD 170 (NGN equivalent displayed on portal).
  • Transit e-Visa (Transit) — Official name: e-Visa (Transit); Validity: Up to 7 days; Max stay: 7 days; Entry: Single entry; Approximate fee: USD 50 (NGN equivalent displayed on portal).

How to apply online

  • Step 1: Create an account or log in on the Nigeria e-Visa portal.
  • Step 2: Complete the e-Visa application form with your personal, travel and passport details.
  • Step 3: Upload required documents (scanned bio-data page of passport, passport photo, hotel booking or invitation letter, travel itinerary, and bank statements).
  • Step 4: Pay the visa fee online using a card (USD or local currency as displayed on the portal).
  • Step 5: Submit the application and monitor status on the portal; you will receive updates via portal notifications and email.
  • Step 6: If approved, print the e-Visa page (with a QR code) and travel with your passport and the printed e-Visa; border control will verify the e-Visa electronically.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fees (approximate): Tourist USD 100; Business USD 170; Transit USD 50. Local currency equivalents are shown on the portal during payment.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for online Nigeria e-Visa; all payments and processing are handled on the official portal.
  • Total cost estimate: See per-fee values above; total cost will depend on the visa type chosen.
  • Standard processing time: 2–5 working days after submission of all required documents.
  • Express/priority: Not publicly advertised on the official portal; no guaranteed expedited option is listed.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Aim to apply at least 3–4 weeks before travel to allow for processing and any document revisions.
  • Common rejection reasons (UK applicants): Incomplete or inconsistent information, passport data mismatch, insufficient funds evidence, missing or non-conforming documents (photos not meeting specs), or travel plans that do not align with the visa category.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Nigeria e-Visa is applied online via the official portal; there is no VFS/BLS submission for the e-Visa route. If a sticker visa is required, apply through a Nigerian embassy/consulate (e.g., the Nigeria High Commission) for a separate process.
  • Travel advisories: Check the UK government's Foreign Travel Advice for Nigeria before travel and stay updated on any security or health advisories.
  • Extension options inside Nigeria: Tourist stays can sometimes be extended by applying to the Nigeria Immigration Service before the current e-Visa expiry; extensions are not guaranteed and depend on NIS assessment; always carry your printed e-Visa and be prepared for immigration checks.
