Visa Free

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Netherlands and must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • Specific forms: No visa forms are required for short stays (visa-free). For long stays, you may need to apply for an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) at a Dutch embassy/consulate and then a Verblijfsvergunning (residence permit) via the IND after arrival.
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed financial requirement for visa-free entry, but border authorities may ask for evidence you can support yourself during your stay (e.g., recent bank statements or a letter of sponsorship).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: It is advisable to have documentation showing where you will stay and a return or onward travel plan in case you are asked.
  • Photo spec: Not required for visa-free entry. If you apply for MVV/residence, you will typically need two recent passport photos (35x45 mm) with a white background.
  • Biometrics: Not required for visa-free entry. For MVV/residence applications, biometrics are usually collected at the Dutch embassy/consulate or via the IND process.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for visa-free entry but highly recommended. For Schengen visas and residence permits, minimum coverage is typically 30,000 EUR for medical emergencies and repatriation.

Application process

  • e-Visa/eTA: How to apply online: Not available for the Netherlands for UK citizens. There is no Dutch online eVisa/ETA for short stays. For long stays, MVV applications are handled via the Dutch embassy/consulate and then the IND process for the residence permit.
  • Visa on arrival: Visa on arrival is not offered for the Netherlands for UK visitors. Short stays are visa-free; long stays require prior MVV/residence arrangements.
  • Sticker visa (MVV) and long-stay process: How to apply: For long stays, submit MVV and supporting documents at the Dutch Embassy/Consulate in the UK (e.g., London). Steps: determine if MVV is required, prepare documents (passport, birth certificate, proof of purpose such as a job offer or university admission, financial evidence, accommodation details), book appointment, pay the MVV fee, attend any required interview, wait for decision (processing can take weeks to months). If MVV is approved, your passport will bear a visa sticker and you can travel to NL to complete the residence permit application. After arrival, apply for the Verblijfsvergunning via IND (online portal ind.nl) and complete biometrics if required.
  • Visa free (entry conditions): How to enter: You do not pre-apply; present your passport at the border. Ensure you do not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. What to show on arrival: passport, may be asked for proof of funds, accommodation, and return/onward travel, and travel health insurance. Extension options: Short stays cannot be extended; for longer stays you must pursue MVV/residence beforehand or from within NL via IND depending on your situation.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee in local currency and approximate USD: Short stay (visa-free): 0 EUR; Long stay (MVV + residence permit): MVV €174 + Verblijfsvergunning €174 ≈ €348 total. Approx USD: around $370 (subject to exchange rates).
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for Netherlands in the UK; applications are handled via the Dutch embassy/consulate and IND; no separate VFS/BLS service fee is typically charged for these routes.
  • Total cost estimate: 0 EUR for short stay; ~€348 (plus any embassy appointment fees if applicable) for long stay when MVV and residence permit are required.
  • Standard processing time: Short stay: not applicable (no visa); MVV processing can take several weeks to a few months (typical up to 3 months, depending on the case); Residence permit processing after arrival via IND is commonly 8–12 weeks, sometimes longer depending on category and workload.
  • Express/priority option: Some urgent cases may be considered with priority processing at additional cost depending on the embassy/consulate and category; availability varies. Check with the Dutch embassy in the UK for current options.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: For short stays, no pre-application is needed beyond ensuring your passport is valid. For long stays (work, study, family), start the MVV/residence permit process as early as possible, ideally 3–6 months before your intended travel date to allow time for visa processing and appointment scheduling.
  • Common rejection reasons for United Kingdom applicants specifically: Insufficient evidence of purpose (e.g., lack of a confirmed study place or job offer), insufficient funds or inability to demonstrate financial support, inadequate accommodation plans, or travel history gaps that raise questions about intent. Ensure documents consistently match the stated purpose.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: The Netherlands generally processes MVV applications via the Dutch embassy/consulate (e.g., London) rather than through VFS/BLS in the UK. Always use the official Dutch government channels and the Netherlands embassy for the MVV route; follow IND guidelines for residence permits after arrival.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Stay updated with UK gov travel advice and the Netherlands government pages (government.nl and IND) for any changes to Schengen rules, ETIAS status, or entry requirements. As of now, UK citizens can travel visa-free for short stays, but ETIAS is being planned; monitor official sources for implementation timelines.
  • Extension options inside the Netherlands: Short stays cannot be extended. For longer stays, you must obtain MVV and a residence permit before the 90-day limit expires (or soon after arrival if applicable) and follow IND procedures. If you are already in NL on a valid residence permit, you may be able to extend or renew the permit through IND before expiry, subject to eligibility.
