What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Libyan online e-Visa application form via the official portal; no DS-160 or UK-specific forms.
  • Financial proof: Not normally required to upload bank statements, but you should have sufficient funds to cover your stay if requested by the authorities.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of hotel reservation or Libyan host invitation, and a return/onward ticket is recommended.
  • Photo spec: Passport-style photo 35x45 mm, white background; upload as JPEG; high-resolution image (300 dpi) is preferred.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not typically required solely for the online e-Visa; you may be asked to provide biometrics at a Libyan embassy/consulate if needed.
  • Travel health insurance: Recommended but not always mandatory.

  • Student visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Libyan e-Visa – Student; Validity: 6 months; Max stay per visit: up to 12 months; Entry: Single; Approximate fee: USD 120.
  • Work visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Libyan e-Visa – Work; Validity: 12 months; Max stay per visit: up to 12 months; Entry: Single (multi-entry may be considered on approval); Approximate fee: USD 150.
  • Family/Visit visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Libyan e-Visa – Family/Visit; Validity: 3–6 months; Max stay per visit: up to 30 days; Entry: Single; Approximate fee: USD 80.

Application process

  • "How to apply online": Visit the official Libyan e-Visa portal via https://www.embassyoflibya.org/ and follow these steps.
  • Create an account and log in.
  • Complete the online e-Visa application form with passport details, travel dates, and purpose of visit.
  • Upload supporting documents: scanned passport bio page, passport-style photo, confirmed hotel or host invitation, travel itinerary, and any invitation letter if required.
  • Pay the visa fee using a credit or debit card on the portal.
  • Submit the application and await processing; you will receive an email notification when a decision is made.
  • If approved, print the e-Visa approval notice (or the PDF visa) and carry it with your passport on entry.
  • Biometrics: If required, you may be asked to provide biometrics at a Libyan embassy/consulate; otherwise online e-Visa does not require a separate biometrics appointment.
  • Approval arrives: The portal will email the official e-Visa or approval letter; keep a copy for border control.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: Tourist USD 60; Business USD 100; Student USD 120; Work USD 150; Family/Visit USD 80 (fees are shown on the official portal at the time of application and may be in USD; LYD equivalent will be displayed where supported).
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for the Libyan e-Visa; payments are processed on the Libyan portal.
  • Total cost estimate: Depending on visa type, around USD 60–150 for the visa itself; additional costs may include express processing if offered.
  • Standard processing time: 3–5 working days after submission.
  • Express/priority option: Some visa types may offer an expedited track for an extra fee (e.g., USD 20–40); check the portal for current options and timing.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply at least 15–20 days before your planned travel date to allow for processing and potential delays.
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: incomplete or inconsistent data; passport validity less than 6 months; travel dates not matching hotel/ invitation details; missing required documents; photo does not meet specifications; insufficient funds (if requested).
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Libya uses an online e-Visa process for many visa types; there is no separate UK VFS/BLS submission for the e-Visa, but some categories or emergencies may require a consular appointment—always verify on the official portal.
  • Travel advisories: Check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Libya before planning travel; Libya remains a high-risk posting with security and entry restrictions that can change.
  • Extension options inside Libya: Extensions may be possible by applying to Libyan authorities before the current visa expires; approvals are not guaranteed and depend on the purpose of stay and security checks.
