What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended date of entry to Kazakhstan and have at least one blank page for stamping, though e-visas are issued electronically.
  • Specific forms: use the online e-visa application on https://www.vmp.gov.kz/; there is no DS-160 or VAF1A for the e-visa.
  • Financial proof: there is no fixed minimum balance required by the e-visa system, but you should have funds to cover your stay; show bank statements if requested.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: provide proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation) and a return/onward flight ticket.
  • Photo spec: upload a digital photo meeting these specs: 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, white background, JPEG, max 2 MB, resolution around 600 x 800 px.
  • Biometrics: not required for the online e-visa; you do not need to visit a visa center for biometrics.
  • Travel health insurance: recommended; carry travel medical insurance during your trip.

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa (Electronic Visa) - Official name: Tourist category; Validity: 30 days from issue; Max stay: 30 days; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 25 (about 10,000 KZT).
  • Business e-Visa (Electronic Visa) - Official name: Business category; Validity: 30 days from issue; Max stay: 30 days; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 25 (about 10,000 KZT).
  • Student visa (Sticker visa) - Official name: Student visa; Validity: up to 12 months (may be extended) per invitation; Entry: Multiple or single as granted; Approx fee: USD 60–90.
  • Work visa (Sticker visa) - Official name: Work visa; Validity: typically 12–24 months depending on contract; Entry: Multiple; Approx fee: USD 120–150.

How to apply online (e-Visa)

  • How to apply online: go to https://www.vmp.gov.kz/, create an account, fill the application, upload passport data page scan, upload a digital photo, provide proof of accommodation or invitation and return ticket, select Tourist or Business category, pay USD 25, and receive the e-visa by email or in your account; print a copy to carry on travel.
  • Processing time: typically 3–4 working days; express processing (1 day) available for an additional fee as shown in the portal.
  • How approval arrives: you will receive the e-visa electronically via email and it will also be accessible in your portal account; border control will verify the visa electronically.

Visa on arrival

  • Not available for UK citizens for Kazakhstan as of the latest guidance; UK travelers should use the online e-visa or a consular visa if a longer stay is required.
  • If you are not eligible for e-visa and need a longer stay, apply for a sticker visa via a Kazakh embassy or consulate before travel; visa-on-arrival at border checkpoints is not generally offered.

Sticker visa (embassy) application

  • How to apply: submit your application with the Kazakh embassy or consulate in the United Kingdom (e.g., the Kazakhstan Embassy in London) or via the official consulate network.
  • Documents (example checklist): valid passport (minimum 6 months validity from entry), completed visa application form, 2 recent passport-sized photos, invitation letter or sponsor from a Kazakh organization for tourism/business, proof of funds, travel itinerary, medical insurance, and any embassy-specific forms.
  • Fees and payment: visa fees payable to Kazakh authorities (in USD or local currency as directed by the embassy); payment methods may include bank transfer or cash at the embassy; actual fee varies by visa type and duration.
  • Timelines: standard processing typically 5–15 working days; express processing may be available at additional cost (3–5 working days).
  • Interview: some applicants may be asked for an interview at the embassy.
  • Entry: upon approval, you will receive a visa sticker placed in your passport; present the passport with the sticker at border control.

Entry and validity at the border

  • Entry allowed with e-Visa at designated border checkpoints (airports and select land borders) as listed on the vmp.gov.kz portal.
  • Duration: up to 30 days per visit for e-visa; multiple-entry sticker visas follow the duration granted by the embassy.
  • Passport validity: ensure passport is valid for the entire stay and beyond; carry a printed copy of e-visa or visa approval and your passport.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply well in advance: while e-visa processing can be completed in 3–4 days, apply at least 7–14 days before travel; allow more time during peak travel seasons.
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: mismatched data between passport and application, passport validity insufficient, unclear purpose, poor-quality photo, missing accommodation or invitation, insufficient funds, or incorrect data in the online form.
  • E-Visa vs embassy: e-Visa is fastest for short stays; embassy-based visas are used for longer stays or special purposes.
  • Travel advisories: check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Kazakhstan before travel; be aware of any bilateral notes or updates.
  • Extensions: extensions inside Kazakhstan are generally not possible for e-Visas; to stay longer, apply for a longer-term visa before travel or re-enter with a new visa.
