British citizens can obtain an Egyptian tourist visa either on arrival at major airports (USD 25, cash) or in advance online via Egypt's official e-Visa portal, both valid for a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • Either cash (USD/GBP/EUR) for the visa-on-arrival stamp, or a completed e-Visa application if applying online beforehand
  • A passport-style photo for the e-Visa application
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
  • Travel health insurance is recommended
  • Biometrics: none required in advance, standard passport stamping on arrival

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival - single entry, valid for a stay of up to 30 days, available at Cairo and other major international airports
  • Tourist e-Visa - single entry (around USD 25) or multiple entry (around USD 60), valid 30 days per entry, applied for online before travel via Egypt's official e-Visa portal
  • Business visa - requires a letter from the UK and Egyptian companies, arranged through the Egyptian Consulate in London in advance

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor and other major airports
  • After landing, travellers buy a visa stamp from a bank kiosk before reaching immigration, paying USD 25 in cash (GBP and EUR also widely accepted, card payment unreliable)
  • The stamped passport is then presented at the immigration desk
  • The whole process typically takes under 15-20 minutes outside peak arrival times

  • Visa on arrival costs USD 25 cash for a single-entry 30-day stay
  • The online e-Visa costs around USD 25 (single entry) or USD 60 (multiple entry) and is normally approved within 3-7 working days, so apply at least a week before travel
  • A business visa through the consulate costs roughly GBP 30-50 and takes 5-10 working days

  • Bring exact USD or GBP cash for the arrival visa stamp to avoid queueing for currency exchange
