British citizens can enter the Republic of Cyprus visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period - Cyprus is an EU member outside Schengen, with its own separate 90/180-day allowance for UK visitors.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the length of the stay (Cyprus does not require 6 months' validity for UK visa-exempt visitors, though airlines may still ask for extra validity)
  • No visa or application needed for tourism/business up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Sufficient funds to cover the stay (not usually checked)
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory for entry
  • Biometrics: none required in advance, passport stamped on entry

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt tourist/business entry - up to 90 days in any 180-day period, calculated separately from the Schengen 90/180 allowance since Cyprus is not in Schengen
  • Pink Slip (temporary residence permit) - for UK nationals staying longer, such as second-home owners, applied for at the Civil Registry and Migration Department inside Cyprus
  • Student/Work visa - category D national visa arranged in advance through the Cyprus High Commission in London for stays over 90 days

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per 180-day period purely for Cyprus - travel to Schengen countries does not count against this allowance and vice versa
  • No employment permitted on visitor status
  • Must show return ticket and accommodation proof if asked
  • Extensions beyond 90 days require switching to a Pink Slip/temporary residence category before the visa-free period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-exempt 90-day entry
  • Processing is instant on arrival
  • A Pink Slip application costs a small administrative fee (around EUR 70-100) and can take several weeks, though it can be applied for after arrival within the 90 days

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Remember Cyprus's 90/180 allowance is separate from mainland Schengen - time in Cyprus does not use up Schengen days and vice versa, which can help extend an overall European trip
  • Property owners planning longer stays should start the Pink Slip application early, as queues at the Nicosia Civil Registry office can be long
  • The areas under Turkish Cypriot administration in the north have different entry rules - crossing via an unofficial route can cause problems re-entering the Republic
