British citizens can enter Costa Rica visa-free for stays of up to 90 days as tourists - no visa or tourist card is required, just a valid passport and proof of onward travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the entire planned stay (no 6-month rule, but airlines may ask for extra validity)
  • No visa application form needed
  • Proof of onward or return travel - airlines routinely check this before boarding
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay (rarely checked, guideline around USD 100 per week)
  • No passport photo required for entry
  • Biometrics: fingerprint and photo taken by immigration officers at the airport on arrival - no advance submission
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory, but strongly recommended, including medical evacuation cover

Visa types

  • Tourist stamp (visa-exempt entry) - granted free on arrival, maximum stay 90 days, non-extendable within the country
  • Business visitor - same visa-exempt stamp, up to 90 days, covers meetings and conferences without taking local employment
  • Residency (Pensionado/Rentista/Investor) - a separate long-term permit applied for from inside Costa Rica, not relevant for short trips

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days permitted per entry
  • No paid work allowed on tourist status
  • Must be able to show proof of onward travel and sometimes an accommodation booking
  • Extension beyond 90 days is not possible from inside the country - travellers must exit and re-enter, though immigration officers can refuse repeated short "border runs"
  • Genuine long stays should be arranged through a Rentista or Pensionado residency application instead

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee - entry is visa-exempt
  • An exit tax of around USD 29 applies on departure, usually already included in the airline ticket
  • No processing time, as entry is granted instantly on arrival
  • No VFS/BLS service involved

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Book a return or onward flight before departure - airlines commonly refuse boarding without one
  • Carry a printed hotel booking or address for at least the first few nights
  • Keep the passport valid well beyond the 90-day stay, since airlines check this at check-in
  • Serial "border hops" to Nicaragua or Panama to reset the 90-day clock can be refused at officer discretion
  • Check the UK Foreign Office travel advice before departure for current entry and safety guidance
