What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa or application form required for short stays
  • Proof of sufficient funds may be requested at the border (cash, cards, or bank statements)
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter) in case of spot checks
  • No photo or biometrics needed for visa-free entry
  • Travel/health insurance strongly recommended since UK EHIC/GHIC does not cover all costs outside emergency care parity rules

Visa types

  • Visa-free short stay: up to 90 days in any 180-day period, covers tourism, business meetings, and visiting family/friends, no fee, multiple entries allowed within the 90/180 limit
  • Long-stay (D) visa: required for stays over 90 days, study, or work; must be applied for in advance at the Bulgarian embassy in London with supporting documents and a fee of around EUR 75-100
  • Bulgaria joined the Schengen area for air and sea borders in 2024 and land borders from January 2025, but the 90/180-day rule for UK visitors is counted jointly with other Schengen states once land borders are included

Entry conditions

  • UK nationals can stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa
  • No paid employment is allowed under visa-free entry
  • At the border you may be asked for your return ticket, accommodation proof, and evidence of funds
  • Extensions of the 90-day visa-free period are not generally possible; you must leave the Schengen area and track your days carefully since Bulgaria's entry now counts toward the wider Schengen 90/180 limit
  • Overstaying can lead to fines, entry bans, and complications for future Schengen travel

  • No processing time - entry is granted at the border on presentation of your passport
  • Long-stay (D) visas cost roughly EUR 75-100 depending on category, processed in 15-30 working days at the embassy
  • No VFS/BLS fee for the visa-free route; D-visa applicants may pay a courier/appointment fee of GBP 20-30 if using a visa center

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Keep track of your Schengen 90/180-day allowance if you're also visiting other Schengen countries on the same trip
  • Carry proof of accommodation and return travel, since Bulgarian border officers do spot-check these more than some other EU states
  • Travel insurance with medical cover is advisable; UK GHIC only covers state-provided healthcare, not repatriation or private care
