British citizens can visit Belgium visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay rules; no visa is currently required, though ETIAS authorisation will apply once it takes effect.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa application required for stays under 90 days
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's address)
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient funds, around EUR 95/day is a commonly cited reference, though rarely checked
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry currently (this changes once the EU Entry/Exit System launches)
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for UK nationals but strongly recommended; a GHIC card covers emergency state healthcare

  • A national D visa or residence permit is required for stays over 90 days, work or study, applied for through the Belgian embassy or consulate in the UK before travel

Entry conditions

  • Be ready to show proof of accommodation, return travel and funds if questioned by Belgian border police

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Keep a careful count of your cumulative Schengen days if visiting several EU countries on one trip - the 90/180 rule applies across the whole area, not per country
  • Get a GHIC card or comprehensive private travel insurance, UK state healthcare reciprocity with the EU is more limited than before Brexit
  • Business meetings are generally permitted visa-free, but longer-term work assignments require a Belgian work/residence permit
  • Apply for ETIAS as soon as it becomes mandatory, ideally several days before travel in case of manual review
  • Keep digital and printed copies of your accommodation bookings and return tickets in case of border checks
