Guide last updated October 20, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed online e-Visa application at evisa.gov.mw
  • Recent digital passport-style photo
  • Scanned copy of passport bio page
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Hotel booking or invitation letter
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or having transited a yellow-fever-endemic country
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured on arrival at Malawian ports of entry, not required online

Visa types

  • Single-entry tourist e-Visa: valid for a stay of up to 30 days, approximate fee USD 50
  • Single-entry business e-Visa: up to 30 days, requires an invitation/business letter, approximate fee USD 50
  • Multiple-entry e-Visa: valid up to 6-12 months depending on category, approximate fee USD 75-100

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official portal evisa.gov.mw by creating an account and completing the application form
  • Steps: upload passport bio page, photo, and supporting documents; pay the fee online by card
  • Fee: approximately USD 50 for a single-entry tourist/business e-Visa, payable in USD via the portal
  • Processing time: typically within 3 business days, though it can extend to 5-7 days during busy periods
  • Approval is emailed as a PDF e-Visa letter - print it and present it with your passport on arrival; a passport stamp is still applied at the port of entry

Fees & processing time

  • e-Visa fee: approximately USD 50 (single entry); USD 75-100 (multiple entry)
  • No separate VFS/BLS fee - the online portal fee is the only charge
  • Total estimated cost: USD 50-55 including card processing charges
  • Standard processing: 3 business days
  • No official express option advertised; apply at least a week before travel to be safe

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Apply online at least 1-2 weeks before departure
  • Common rejection/delay reasons: blurry document scans, mismatched passport details, missing yellow fever certificate for connecting itineraries through endemic regions
  • Since Malawi has no embassy in Pakistan, the e-Visa portal is the only official application channel - avoid third-party agents claiming to offer in-person services locally
  • Keep both a digital and printed copy of the approval letter
  • Extensions are possible at the Immigration Department in Lilongwe or Blantyre before the visa expires
