  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation (not necessarily ticketed) and a detailed day-by-day itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings for the entire stay)
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months, plus a Japan-based guarantor's financial documents and employment certificate, since most Pakistani applicants require a guarantor/inviter in Japan
  • Letter of guarantee and invitation from the Japan-based sponsor or tour agency
  • Employment letter/NOC and company registration documents for business visas
  • Biometrics not generally required, though some visa centres may request them

Visa types

  • Temporary Visitor Visa (Tourist): single entry, valid up to 90 days, typical stay 15-30 days, fee JPY 3,000
  • Temporary Visitor Visa (Business): similar validity, requires an invitation from a Japanese company, fee JPY 3,000
  • Multiple-entry Visa: valid up to 3 years, requires a strong travel history and guarantor, fee JPY 6,000
  • Student Visa: requires a Certificate of Eligibility issued by Japan's Immigration Services Agency before applying

How to apply

  • Submit the application through the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad or its designated visa centres in Karachi and Lahore
  • Gather all documents including the guarantor letter and financial proof, required for most Pakistani applicants
  • Submit the application in person; the passport is retained during processing
  • Pay the visa fee at collection time (fee charged only if the visa is approved)
  • Standard processing is 5-10 working days, though it can extend to 3-4 weeks for first-time applicants pending guarantor verification
  • An interview is not typically required, but officers may request additional documents

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry visa fee: JPY 3,000 (~USD 20 / ~PKR 5,600), charged only if the visa is granted
  • Multiple-entry visa fee: JPY 6,000 (~USD 40)
  • No separate service fee at most Japan missions handling Pakistan applications
  • Standard processing: 5-10 working days; actual timeline often runs 2-4 weeks for Pakistani nationals due to guarantor verification
  • No official express service available

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel to allow time for guarantor verification
  • Common rejection reasons: no verifiable guarantor in Japan, weak financial documentation, unclear itinerary, insufficient ties to Pakistan
  • A strong guarantor letter from a Japan-based individual or registered company significantly improves approval chances
  • Check current guidance from Japan's Immigration Services Agency, as requirements for Pakistani nationals have periodically tightened
  • Extensions of stay inside Japan are possible at regional immigration bureaus but require strong justification
