Guide last updated October 19, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Completed visa application form
  • Two recent passport-style photos, white background
  • Letter of invitation from a sponsor, company or registered tour operator in Eritrea
  • Proof of accommodation and detailed itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the trip
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) taken at the embassy or on arrival in Asmara
  • Travel health insurance recommended; yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic area

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, valid for a stay of up to 30 days, approximate fee USD 70-90
  • Business visa: single or multiple entry, requires company sponsorship, approximate fee USD 90-120
  • Transit visa: short validity for layovers, lower fee around USD 40

How to apply

  • Since Eritrea has no embassy in Pakistan, applications are generally submitted through the nearest Eritrean embassy (commonly in the UAE or via the honorary consulate network, see eritrea.be for European processing)
  • Submit the application form, photos, invitation letter, passport and supporting documents in person or by courier
  • Pay the visa fee in cash or by bank transfer as instructed by the mission
  • Standard processing takes 2-4 weeks due to approval requirements from Asmara
  • Some applicants are asked for an additional clearance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before the visa is issued
  • Collect the visa sticker in your passport before departure

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately USD 70-90 for tourist visas
  • Business visa fee: approximately USD 90-120
  • No universal service center fee; courier costs may apply if submitting through a third country
  • Total cost estimate: USD 90-150 including courier and photo costs
  • Standard processing time: 2-4 weeks
  • No official express service is available

Tips for Pakistan travelers

  • Begin the process at least 6-8 weeks before travel given the lack of a local embassy and the need for Asmara's clearance
  • A clear invitation letter from a known sponsor significantly improves approval chances
  • Common rejection reasons include vague travel purposes and missing sponsor documentation
  • Working with a reputable tour operator familiar with Eritrean visa procedures is strongly advised
  • Extensions inside Eritrea must be arranged through the Department of Immigration in Asmara and are not guaranteed
