What you need

  • Residence permit for family reunification: Official name: Residence permit for family members; Validity: Tied to the principal permit duration; Max stay: As long as the principal permit is valid; Entry: Multiple entries allowed; Approx fee: about SEK 2,000 (approx USD 210).

Entry conditions

  • For short stays (up to 90 days): You do not need a prior visa; you may be asked at border control to show your passport, purpose of visit, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds and a return/onward ticket.
  • For long stays or moves (work, study, family reunification): You must apply for the appropriate permit before traveling to Sweden, via Migrationsverket or the Swedish Embassy/Consulate; typical steps include creating an online account on migrationsverket.se, submitting the online application with supporting documents, paying the fee, and attending biometrics if required.
  • How to apply for long-term permits: After approval, you will receive a residence permit card by mail; you must travel with the permit and carry it along with your passport when you move to Sweden.
  • On arrival with a long-term permit: You must carry your residence permit card and your passport; keep copies of important documents in case they are requested.
