What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay
  • No visa needed for short-term tourism/business for US citizens
  • A completed arrival/customs declaration, ideally done in advance online via Visit Japan Web (covers immigration, customs, and optional tax-free shopping registration)
  • Proof of onward/return travel may be requested at the border
  • Fingerprint and photo are taken at the immigration counter on arrival, standard for nearly all foreign visitors
  • Travel health insurance recommended

Visa types

  • No visa required for Temporary Visitor stays up to 90 days, covering tourism and most business meetings with no paid local work
  • A Working Holiday visa exists for some nationalities but the US does not currently have a working holiday agreement with Japan, so check current eligibility before assuming this applies
  • Longer-term Work, Study, or Spouse visas must be arranged in advance through a Japanese consulate and fall outside the visa-free allowance

Entry conditions

  • Carry proof of your return or onward flight, as it's occasionally requested
  • If your trip could exceed 90 days, plan a separate visa well in advance, since this cannot be converted or extended from inside Japan for tourism
  • Keep your entry stamp/residence information handy, as some businesses and hotels ask for it at check-in
