US citizens can enter Norway visa-free for tourism or short business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; no visa is required, but you must meet passport validity rules and be prepared to show funds, accommodation, and return travel if asked.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area; it must have been issued within the last 10 years; ensure you have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for entry stamps.
  • Specific forms: No visa application forms are required for US citizens traveling to Norway for short stays; there is no DS-160; no ETIAS submission is required yet. Carry your passport and travel documents.
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed monetary requirement for visa-free entry; you may be asked at the border to show you can cover your stay. Have accessible funds (credit or debit cards) and, if requested, recent bank statements.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: You may be asked for proof of accommodation and a return or onward ticket; have hotel confirmations or an invitation letter ready; keep your travel itinerary handy.
  • Photo spec: No separate photo submission is required for visa-free entry; your passport photo is in your passport. If you need to replace your passport, standard photo specs apply: 35 x 45 mm, white background, head centered.
  • Biometrics: US citizens do not submit biometrics in advance for visa-free entry; border control will scan your passport and may collect data as part of standard border checks.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel health insurance is not required for visa-free entry, but it is strongly recommended. A practical minimum coverage would be medical expenses up to at least 30,000 EUR, including repatriation.

Entry conditions
