What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you intend to leave Latvia, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • ETIAS and forms: A pre-travel ETIAS authorization is required before travel to Latvia; apply online at https://etias.europa.eu/. No Latvian visa application form is needed for visa-free travel; your ETIAS and passport are used for entry.
  • Financial proof: There is no published minimum funds requirement for US citizens entering Latvia visa-free; border control may request proof of sufficient funds. Carry recent bank statements or a major credit/debit card to show you can support your stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: You should be prepared to show proof of accommodation (hotel confirmation or address of stay) and onward or return travel if requested.
  • Photo specs: If you need an ETIAS photo, you will need a recent passport photo: 35x45 mm, white background, full-face, no headwear unless for religious or medical reasons, no reflections.
  • Biometrics: There is no pre-travel biometrics submission for visa-free travel; border officers may record biometric data as part of standard border control procedures. For any Latvian long-stay visa or residence permit, you will be asked to provide biometrics at the consulate/visa center.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for entry, but strongly recommended. Have travel medical insurance with international coverage; a common benchmark for Schengen coverage is at least €30,000 for medical emergencies.

Entry conditions

  • Stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period in Latvia/Schengen.
  • Work restrictions: You may not undertake paid work during a visa-free stay unless you have the appropriate Latvian work authorization. If you plan to work, obtain a work visa or permit before arriving.

Tips for United States travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: For visa-free travel, apply for ETIAS as soon as you plan to travel; do not apply too far in advance. For D-visa, start at least 3–4 months before your intended travel to study/work; consult the Latvian embassy.
  • Common rejection reasons for US travelers: Inadequate or inconsistent travel purpose, lack of funds or return proof, insufficient accommodation, invalid ETIAS details, passport validity issues (less than 3 months beyond planned stay).
