What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • Specific forms: No Greek visa forms are required for visa-free stays. If you later apply for a Schengen visa, you will complete the Schengen visa application form through the Greek consulate process (no Greece-specific online form for visa-free entry).
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed minimum amount published by Greece for visa-free entry; border officers may ask to see funds or proof of ability to cover your stay. Carry credit/debit cards and recent bank statements if needed.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have proof of accommodation for your stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter) and a round-trip or onward ticket.
  • Photo spec: No Greece entry photo submission is required for visa-free travel. If you apply for a future visa, standard Schengen photo rules apply (35x45 mm, white background).
  • Biometrics: No pre-travel biometrics are required for visa-free entry. If you apply for a visa, you will provide biometrics at the consulate/visa application center.
  • Travel health insurance: Not required for visa-free entry; highly recommended to have travel medical insurance that covers medical emergencies during your trip.

  • Student visa (long-stay Type D for studies): official name Greece National Visa Type D for Studies. Valid for the duration of study; may be issued for multiple entries; approximate fee: around 180 EUR.
  • Work/Employment visa (long-stay Type D): official name Greece National Visa Type D for Employment. Valid for the period of authorized employment; approximate fee: around 180 EUR.

How to apply

  • How to apply online: Not applicable for Greece short-stay tourism; there is no Greece-wide online e-visa portal for US citizens. Apply through the official MFA portal and the chosen consulate or visa center (VFS Global/BLS International as applicable) per your location. For official guidance, visit https://www.mfa.gr/
  • Visa on arrival: Not available for Greece Schengen entry for US citizens. Do not expect visa-on-arrival.
  • Sticker visa (consulate/visa center): Steps: determine category, gather documents, schedule appointment via the Greek consulate/visa center, submit documents and fees, provide biometrics if required, attend an interview if requested, await decision.
  • Required documents (common): completed visa application form, valid passport (at least 3 months beyond stay and issued within last 10 years), passport-sized photos, proof of accommodation, travel itinerary, proof of financial means, travel insurance for Schengen area (minimum 30,000 EUR for those applying for a visa), and copy of round-trip ticket. Biometrics as required.
  • Interview: may be required depending on the consulate and case.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Plan well in advance: start the visa process if you anticipate staying longer than 90 days or for a purpose requiring a national visa; for tourist stays, you can travel visa-free up to 90 days.
  • Common rejection reasons for US applicants (if applying for a visa): inconsistent travel purpose, lack of travel agenda or accommodation details, insufficient evidence of funds or ties to the US, missing or inconsistent documents, or failure to show return/onward ticket.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For many US applicants, using a visa center (VFS Global or BLS) is the practical route; ensure you follow the exact documents and appointment procedures requested by the chosen center.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Check the MFA Greece travel advice and the U.S. Department of State travel advisories prior to travel; ensure your passport and travel plans comply with current guidelines.
  • Extension options inside Greece: Short-stay (up to 90 days in 180) cannot be extended on arrival; to stay longer, you must leave and apply for a Greek national visa (Type D) from outside Greece; or apply for a new visa before travel for your intended purpose.
