US citizens do not need a visa for Estonia and can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period as part of the Schengen Area.

What you need

  • Valid US passport, valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient funds (around EUR 50-100/day is a common informal benchmark, rarely checked in practice)
  • Travel health insurance is recommended; not mandatory for US visa-free entry but useful given Schengen norms
  • No visa, biometrics, or photo required at entry

Visa types

  • No visa required for short tourist/business stays — covered under the US-EU visa waiver for the Schengen Area
  • Longer stays, work, or study require a national (type D) visa or residence permit applied for through Estonia's embassy/consulate or the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board
  • From mid-2026 onward, ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) pre-travel registration is expected to apply to US visa-free travelers — check current status before booking

  • Track your 90/180-day Schengen allowance across all Schengen countries combined, not just Estonia — many travelers accidentally overstay by forgetting time spent elsewhere in the zone
  • Check ETIAS requirement status before booking, since this has been repeatedly delayed but is expected to become mandatory for US travelers
  • Make sure your passport has at least 3 months validity beyond your departure date — Estonia strictly enforces this Schengen rule
