US citizens can visit Bulgaria visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period — Bulgaria is now a full Schengen member for both air/sea and land borders.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient funds if requested
  • No visa application, photo, or biometric submission required for stays under 90 days

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism, business, or family visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, counted across the full Schengen area
  • Stays longer than 90 days, employment, or study require a national (type D) visa or residence permit arranged in advance through a Bulgarian embassy/consulate

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, shared with all Schengen countries
  • No work permitted on visa-free entry; business visits are limited to meetings and negotiations
  • Bulgaria completed full Schengen integration (air, sea, and land borders) as of January 2025, so entries by land from other Schengen countries no longer require a separate passport check or count separately
  • ETIAS travel authorization will be required for US citizens once it becomes mandatory across the Schengen area — check current status before booking
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only granted for exceptional circumstances via Bulgaria's Migration Directorate

Tips for United States travelers

  • Track your cumulative Schengen days if combining Bulgaria with trips to other EU countries, since the 90/180 count is shared
  • Keep hotel bookings and return tickets accessible, as these are commonly checked
  • Now that Bulgaria is fully in Schengen, border waits between Bulgaria and neighbors like Romania and Greece should be significantly shorter
  • Register your trip with the US Embassy in Sofia through the State Department's STEP program
  • Once ETIAS is mandatory, apply a few days ahead of travel even though approval is usually fast
