What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  • Completed online e-visa application through the official gov.br portal
  • Digital passport-style photo uploaded during application
  • Scanned passport bio page
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient funds may be requested
  • No in-person biometrics required before travel

Visa types

  • VITUR (tourist) e-visa — multiple entry, valid up to 10 years (or until passport expiry, whichever is sooner), maximum stay of 90 days per visit, extendable once up to 180 days total per year
  • VINEG (business) e-visa — similar validity and process, for business meetings and conferences
  • Fee for both categories: approx. USD 80.90 government processing fee

How to apply online

  • Apply through the official Brazilian government e-visa portal (gov.br) — avoid third-party sites that charge inflated service fees
  • Create an account, complete the application form, and upload your photo and passport scan
  • Pay the USD 80.90 fee online by credit card
  • Processing typically takes about 5 business days, though it can take longer during peak periods
  • The approved e-visa is linked electronically to your passport number — print a copy of the approval for your records, though it is checked electronically at the border

Tips for United States travelers

  • Apply at least a month before travel since processing times can extend during high season (around Carnival and major holidays)
  • Keep a digital and printed copy of your e-visa approval even though it's electronically linked to your passport
  • Common rejection reasons include mismatched passport data and blurry or non-compliant photos
  • Once issued, the visa is valid for years, so frequent travelers to Brazil only need to apply once
  • Register your trip with the nearest US Consulate (Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or others) through the State Department's STEP program
