What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of entry into Afghanistan.
  • Expired or damaged passport pages: Ensure two blank visa pages remain for stamping if a sticker visa is issued via embassy.
  • Specific forms: Apply online through the Afghanistan e-Visa portal at evisa.mfa.gov.af; there is no separate DS-160 form for US travelers. If applying at an Afghan embassy/consulate, use the post’s visa application form as directed by that post.
  • Financial proof: For e-Visa applications, no hard proof of funds is required, but you should be able to show funds to cover your stay if asked; for business or student cases, include a sponsor letter or official invitation from an Afghan company or institution.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have hotel reservations or an invitation letter with address in Afghanistan and a return/onward ticket confirming departure from Afghanistan.
  • Photo specification: Upload a recent color passport-style photo (2x2 inches / 51x51 mm) with a plain light background; image must be clear and in focus.
  • Biometrics: For the online e-Visa route, no in-person biometrics are required unless requested by authorities; if you apply at a consulate, be prepared to provide biometrics as directed.
  • Travel health insurance: Not strictly required for entry but strongly recommended; verify vaccination requirements and carry proof if requested by the border authorities.

  • Afghanistan e-Visa – Business: Official name Afghanistan e-Visa (Business); validity 90 days from issue; max stay 30 days; single-entry; approximate fee USD 150.
  • Afghanistan Student Visa: Official name Afghanistan Student Visa; validity equal to the duration of the study (up to 1 year per issuance, extendable by MFA); entry type typically single-entry; approximate fee USD 200.
  • Afghanistan Work/Employment Visa: Official name Afghanistan Work Visa; validity 1 year; multiple-entry; max stay per entry 90 days; approximate fee USD 250.

How to apply

  • How to apply online (e-Visa): Go to evisa.mfa.gov.af, create an account, complete the online application, upload passport scan and a recent photo, pay the visa fee online with a credit/debit card, and submit. Once approved, you will receive the e-Visa as a PDF by email; print it and present it with your passport on arrival in Afghanistan.
  • Visa on arrival: Availability is limited and depends on the port of entry and MFA approval. If permitted, proceed to the designated border entry with a printed invitation or reference for your visa type, present your passport and e-Visa (if any), pay the visa fee in cash (USD or local AFN as accepted), and proceed through immigration with the printed documents.
  • Sticker visa via embassy/consulate: Locate the Afghan embassy or consulate that handles US applicants; prepare documents including passport copy, photos, e-Visa confirmation (if already issued), visa application form as provided by the post, and pay the visa fee at the embassy (payment methods vary by post). Standard processing is about 5–10 business days; express service may be available for an additional fee; an interview may be requested by some posts.

Tips for United States travelers

  • Apply well in advance: Start at least 2–3 weeks before travel; allow up to 4 weeks for processing in busy periods.
  • Common rejection reasons for US applicants: Passport validity under 6 months on entry, passport with insufficient blank pages, inconsistent or incomplete application data, missing required documents (invitation letter or hotel reservation), or travel purpose deemed inappropriate or uncertain by MFA staff.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Afghanistan e-Visa is primarily issued online; most posts do not use VFS; if you apply through a local Afghan embassy, follow their posted instructions and pay any local service fees as required.
  • Travel advisories: Check the US Department of State travel advisory for Afghanistan; as of now, the State Department maintains a Do Not Travel advisory due to armed conflict and security risks; consider delaying travel if not essential.
  • Bilateral notes: Afghanistan's security situation can change rapidly; maintain contact with your embassy and monitor MFA announcements; carry a copy of your e-Visa approval and embassy contact information at all times.
