What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen short-stay visa application form (the Vatican is covered by Italy's Schengen visa, not a separate Vatican visa)
  • 2 recent passport photos, 35x45mm, white background
  • Proof of accommodation in Rome (hotel booking or a formal invitation letter if visiting for a papal audience or Vatican-related business)
  • Round-trip flight itinerary
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing at least EUR 50/day of planned stay
  • Travel health insurance valid across the Schengen area with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) taken in person at the Italian Visa Application Centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C), Tourism: single or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, fee approx EUR 90
  • Schengen Short-Stay Visa, Business/Religious purpose: for official Vatican visits, pilgrimages, or Holy See accreditation, requires a formal invitation letter
  • There is no standalone Vatican visa - the Holy See relies entirely on Italy's Schengen visa for entry

  • Submit the Schengen visa form, passport, photos, proof of funds, flight and hotel bookings, insurance, and any Vatican invitation letter or papal audience confirmation
  • Pay the visa fee (EUR 90, approx CNY 700) plus a visa centre service fee (approx CNY 150-200)
  • Provide biometrics in person at the centre
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, which can extend to 30-45 days for complex cases
  • Decision is a visa sticker placed in the passport, collected in person or by courier

  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient bank statement history, vague travel purpose, or no proof of a confirmed Vatican-related activity
  • Use the official Italian Visa Application Centre rather than unlicensed travel agents
