What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK and have at least 6 months validity beyond your planned departure date, with at least one blank page for the vignette/BRP.
  • Specific forms: Online visa application only; there is no DS-160 or VAF1A for UK; create an account at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa and complete the Standard Visitor or other visa form; after submission you must book a biometrics appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or other VACs).
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 6 months showing funds to cover the trip; salary slips and proof of income; if you have a UK sponsor or home-country sponsor, include a sponsorship letter and sponsor bank statements; there is no official minimum amount, but show funds sufficient to cover travel, accommodation and living costs for the stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Evidence of accommodation in the UK (hotel bookings or invitation letter with host’s address) and evidence of onward/return travel (return flight or rail bookings).
  • Photo spec: 35x45 mm; white background; full face; taken within the last 6 months; neutral expression; no hats; no heavy makeup; glasses allowed only if medically required; ensure eyes are clearly visible.
  • Biometrics: Yes, you must attend a UK Visa Application Centre in China to have your fingerprints and photo taken; once approved, your visa is either a vignette in your passport or an Electronic Visa Status; for stays longer you may receive a BRP after arriving in the UK.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory, but strongly recommended to have travel/medical insurance that covers UK medical costs during your trip.

  • Student visa: Official name Student visa; Validity: length of course plus 4 months; Max stay: course length plus grace; Entry: multiple entry often; Approx fee: base £363 plus NHS surcharge (£470 per year of stay).
  • Skilled Worker visa (Work): Official name Skilled Worker visa; Validity: up to 5 years per visa (extendable); Max stay: aligned with contract length; Entry: multiple entry; Approx fee: base from £625 to £1,423 depending on length and job; NHS surcharge £624 per year.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Use the official portal at https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa; Steps: create an account, select visa type, complete online form, upload required documents, pay the visa fee, book and attend a biometrics appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in China, wait for a decision, and passport return with vignette or BRP arrangement.
  • Visa on arrival: Not available for Chinese citizens; UK visas must be applied for prior to travel.
  • Sticker visa vs e-visa/BRP: Most applicants receive a vignette (visa sticker) in the passport for entry; for longer stays you will be issued a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) to collect after you arrive in the UK. If using a long-term visa, the BRP will be sent to your UK address or picked up at a designated location.
  • TB test and documents: TB test is not required for all short visits; for longer stays (e.g., Student or Work) you may need a TB test from an approved clinic if your length of stay requires it; proof of CAS from your education provider is required for Student visas; for work, a certificate of sponsorship from your employer is required.

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply well in advance: aim to apply at least 3–4 weeks before travel; peak travel periods may require longer; allow extra time for biometrics appointment slots.
  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants: insufficient funds or inability to prove onward/return travel; lack of clear purpose or itinerary; insufficient ties to China (employment, family, property); inadequate accommodation proof; failure to provide CAS/offer letter for Student visas; inaccurate or missing documents.
  • VFS Global vs embassy application: UK visa applications from China are typically processed through the official online system with a biometrics appointment at a UK VAC operated by VFS Global; ensure you use the correct VACs and appointments and keep copies of all documents.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: check the latest UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advisories for China and any visa policy updates on gov.uk; rules can change, especially around health declarations and travel restrictions.
