Visa types

  • Visitor Permit (visa on arrival), single entry, valid 31 days from arrival, fee approx. TOP 120 (~$50 USD)
  • Business Permit (visa on arrival), single entry, valid 31 days, fee approx. TOP 200 (~$85 USD), requires a letter from the inviting Tongan business
  • Both permits can be extended inside Tonga through the Immigration Division, up to a combined maximum stay of 6 months

  • Arrive at Fua'amotu International Airport (Tongatapu) or an outer-island port of entry
  • Present your passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation at the immigration counter
  • Pay the TOP 120 fee in cash (Tongan pa'anga preferred; USD/NZD sometimes accepted at a less favorable rate)
  • Immigration stamps a 31-day visitor permit; there is no prior online application
  • Queues are generally short given Tonga's limited flight frequency — budget 20-30 minutes for arrival processing

Tips for China travelers

  • Carry Tongan pa'anga or small-denomination USD, since card payment is not reliably available at the airport counter
  • Confirm your onward flight before travel — Tonga's limited schedule via Fiji or New Zealand means immigration checks return bookings closely
  • To extend beyond 31 days, visit the Immigration Division office in Nuku'alofa well before the permit expires; same-day extensions are not guaranteed
  • There is no Tongan embassy or consulate in mainland China, so visa matters are handled on arrival or through Tonga's mission in Fiji or Australia
