South Africa Visa for China Citizens 2026

Chinese citizens need an e-visa to enter South Africa for tourism or business — apply online at the official DHA portal; e-visa fees start around USD 60 and processing is typically 5–7 working days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the expected date of departure from South Africa and have at least two blank pages for visa stamping.
  • Specific forms: Complete the online e-visa application form on the official DHA portal; there is no separate DS-160 or VAF1A form for the South Africa e-visa.
  • Financial proof: Provide bank statements from the last 3 months showing sufficient funds to cover your stay and return travel; there is no published minimum amount; show funds adequate for your planned itinerary.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter) and a return or onward ticket showing your intended departure from South Africa.
  • Photo spec: One recent color passport-style photo (35 mm x 45 mm) with a plain light background; taken within the last 6 months.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not normally required at the online stage for the e-visa; if requested, you may be asked to visit a visa application center to submit biometrics.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory, but strongly recommended to cover medical costs during your stay.

  • Business e-Visa — Official name: Business e-Visa; Validity: up to 2 years; Max stay per visit: 90 days; Entry: Multiple; Approx fee: ZAR 1,120 (~USD 68).
  • Student visa (Study visa) — Official name: Study visa (may be available via e-visa in limited cases); Validity: up to the duration of study; Max stay per visit: typically governed by study permit; Entry: Multiple; Approx fee: ZAR 1,500 (~USD 90). Note: Not all student categories may be available via the online e-visa; some may require traditional embassy processing.
  • Work visa — Official name: Work visa; Validity: up to 2 years (renewable); Max stay per visit: typically aligned with contract duration; Entry: Multiple; Approx fee: ZAR 1,200 (~USD 72). Note: Work visas often require employer sponsorship and may not be issued entirely online; verify applicability.

How to apply online

  • How to apply online: Start at the official DHA portal link: https://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/immigration-services and navigate to the e-visa section; create an account or sign in; complete the online application with your personal details and passport data; upload supporting documents (passport bio page, photo, travel itinerary, hotel bookings or invitation letter, bank statements); pay the e-visa fee online using a credit or debit card; submit the application; you will receive an application reference number and an email acknowledgment; processing typically takes 5–7 working days; you will receive the approved e-visa as a digital document or email attachment which you should print and carry.
  • Fees and payment: All payments are processed in ZAR online by card; no cash payments on the DHA site.
  • Processing time and approval: Standard processing is 5–7 working days; there is no widely offered express option for the SA e-visa path; approval arrives by email as a digital visa grant or confirmation that can be printed.
  • Where to present: The e-visa grant is electronic; you must carry your passport and the printed e-visa (if provided) at entry; immigration may verify documents at the port of entry.

  • Any official service or handling fee: If applicable, the DHA site currently notes online processing fees; there is no separate VFS/BLS service fee for the online e-visa route in many cases; confirm on the portal.

  • Standard processing time: 5–7 working days; extendable up to 15 days in some cases.
  • Express/priority option: Not commonly offered for the SA e-visa path; check the DHA portal for any current options.

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply well in advance: Start the online e-visa application at least 3–4 weeks before your intended travel date; apply earlier if you have a longer itinerary.
  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants: Incomplete or inconsistent information; passport details not matching the application; insufficient or unclear travel plans; lack of financial means evidence; missing hotel bookings or invitation letters; poor photo quality; failure to meet the entry purpose for an e-visa category.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For the SA e-visa, applications are submitted online via the DHA portal; there is no separate in-person submission at VFS/BLS for the e-visa; other traditional visa routes (if your case falls outside e-visa) may go through VFS/BLS or the SA embassy/consulate.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Check the South Africa Department of Home Affairs and your local SA embassy/consulate for any travel advisories or visa policy updates; ensure your passport validity and inoculation requirements are current; ensure flight arrivals align with visa validity.
  • Extension options: Extensions for tourism visas may be possible from within South Africa by applying to the Department of Home Affairs before your current visa expires; approval is not guaranteed and extensions are evaluated on the same grounds as new visas.
