Chinese citizens traveling to Rwanda can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport and selected land border posts; the tourist visa on arrival is typically valid for 30 days, single entry, with a fee of about USD 60.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry and have at least 1 blank visa page.
  • No pre-departure visa application form is required for visa on arrival; you will complete relevant arrival forms at the port of entry if requested.
  • Financial proof: show you have sufficient funds for the stay (a guideline is at least USD 50–100 per day).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: provide hotel bookings or proof of address in Rwanda and a return/onward ticket.
  • Photo spec: bring 1 recent passport photo (2x2 inches / 51x51 mm) with a plain white background, if a photo is requested at the desk.
  • Biometrics: yes; fingerprints and a digital photo are usually collected at the immigration desk on arrival.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory, but recommended.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: not required for travelers arriving from China, but carry a yellow fever certificate if you have transited through or are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk; check current requirements on migration.gov.rw.

Application process

  • How to apply online: visa on arrival does not require a pre-application; proceed to an eligible port of entry (Kigali International Airport or designated land borders) and request your visa on arrival at the immigration desk.   • How it works at the border: present your passport, return/onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and funds; pay the visa fee in USD or RWF; biometrics will be collected; you will receive your visa stamp.
  • Accepted currencies: USD and Rwanda Franc (RWF); sometimes other major currencies may be accepted at discretion by border officers.
  • Arrival process: queue at the immigration desk; have your documents ready; processing time is typically 30 minutes to a few hours depending on queues.
  • Note: if you arrive at a port where VOA is not available for your nationality, you may be directed to the eVisa option or Embassy consular service as applicable; always verify on migration.gov.rw before travel.

Tips for China travelers

  • Plan for VOA timing: there is no pre-approval for VOA; you can apply on arrival, but ensure you have all required documents to avoid delays.
  • Common rejection reasons for Chinese applicants: incomplete proof of accommodation or return ticket, insufficient funds, passport validity less than 6 months, missing or unclear travel purpose, or lack of required health/vaccination documents when applicable.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: VOA is handled at the point of entry by Rwanda immigration; there is no separate VFS/BLS application for VOA; for alternative routes or if VOA is not available, use the official embassy/consulate route via migration.gov.rw or https://www.minaffet.gov.rw/ as advised.
