What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen area; issued within the last 10 years; contains at least two blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form filled online at https://www.vistos.mne.gov.pt/; print, sign and bring to the appointment.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 3 months, payslips or tax returns; if self-employed, business bank statements; demonstrate sufficient funds to cover the stay; as a guideline, have funds to cover 80–110 EUR per day; if another person sponsors the trip, include a sponsorship letter and sponsor’s recent financial documents.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Confirmed hotel reservations or an official invitation letter; a detailed travel itinerary; round-trip air ticket or reservation.
  • Photo spec: Two recent color passport photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm) with a white background; taken within the last 6 months; full face visible; no headgear unless for religious reasons; no glasses with glare.
  • Biometrics: Biometric data must be provided at the visa application center; if you have given biometrics for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, re-use may be possible.
  • Travel health insurance: Mandatory travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR for medical emergencies and repatriation; valid for all Schengen states; provide a policy certificate.

  • How to apply online: Start at https://www.vistos.mne.gov.pt/; create an account, complete the Schengen visa application form, upload or attach documents as required, print and sign the form.
  • Document preparation: Gather passport, online application form, photos, travel insurance, itinerary, accommodation proof, financial proof, employment or study documents, invitation letter if applicable, and any other documents listed in the portal’s checklist.
  • Where to submit: Book an appointment at the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate or at the designated visa application center (in China, this is typically a visa center operated by the service provider in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou; verify on the Embassy site https://www.portaldascomunidades.mne.gov.pt/).
  • Biometrics and submission: Attend the appointment to submit originals, copies and biometrics; submit the documents in person and answer any questions or interview requests from the consul.
  • Fees payment: Pay the visa fee (and any service center fee) at the appointment; payment methods and currency are shown on the booking site.
  • Processing and outcome: After submission, the consulate processes the application (average around 15 calendar days; could be up to 30 days in some cases); you will be notified by the portal or email; if approved, collect your passport or have it delivered per the center’s options.
  • Interview: An interview may be requested for certain applicants or purposes.
  • Note: Do not purchase non-refundable travel until you have received the visa decision.

Tips for China travelers

  • When to apply: Start the process at least 2–3 weeks before travel; best practice is to apply 1–2 months ahead; you can apply up to 6 months before your planned travel date.
  • Common rejection reasons for Chinese applicants: insufficient funds or weak financial documentation; missing or inconsistent documents; travel itinerary that does not align with the purpose of visit; lack of solid ties to China (no stable employment, property, or family commitments); missing or improperly translated documents; inconsistent dates between documents; lack of travel medical insurance or inadequate coverage.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: In China, you typically apply via the designated visa center (VFS Global or other service provider) rather than directly at the embassy; the service center handles document collection and biometrics; always use the official vistos.mne.gov.pt portal for forms and the official consulate site for appointments.

  • Extensions inside Portugal: Short-stay visas (Type C) are rarely extended; to stay longer than 90 days, you generally need to apply for a national long-stay visa (Type D) or another valid permit from SEF while in Portugal, which typically requires returning to your home country to apply in many cases.
