What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area and must be issued within the last 10 years; there should be at least two blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form (short-stay) to be completed online via the UDI portal or downloaded, printed, and signed; include all sections.
  • Financial proof: Proof of funds to cover the stay; there is no fixed minimum published by Norway; print bank statements for the last 3 months or other evidence of sufficient funds; include sponsorship letters if applicable.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Evidence of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter with host’s address) and a round-trip or onward travel itinerary or return flight booking.
  • Photo spec: One recent passport photo (35 x 45 mm) with a white background, taken within the last 6 months; color photo; avoid head coverings unless required by religion; comply with other standard photo rules.
  • Biometrics: Yes — you must provide biometrics at the visa application centre or the embassy/consulate (fingerprints and photo). Biometrics may not be required if you have provided biometrics for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR, valid for the entire Schengen area and for the whole stay; include policy details and insurer contact information.

Application process

  • How to apply online: There is no general e-Visa for Norway; start with the Schengen visa application form on the UDI portal; after submission, book an appointment at the nearest Norwegian visa application centre or embassy/consulate; you will usually need to submit biometrics when you attend the appointment; pay the visa fee before or at the appointment; wait for the decision by mail or through the portal; if approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker.
  • Visa on arrival: not available for Chinese citizens traveling to Norway; you must apply in advance.

Tips for China travelers

  • Common reasons for rejection (China-specific): incomplete forms; missing or insufficient financial proof; missing travel health insurance meeting the 30,000 EUR coverage; lack of accommodation or flight bookings; lack of a clear travel purpose or ties to home country; inconsistent information across documents; insufficient proof of funds; not meeting Schengen travel restriction requirements.
  • VFS vs direct embassy: applying via the official visa application centre (VFS Global) is generally recommended for biometric capture and document handling; direct submission at the embassy is possible where offered; always follow the local centre’s instructions.
  • Travel advisories: check the official Norwegian authorities for any travel advisories or bilateral notes; monitor UDI updates for visa policy changes.
  • Extension options inside Norway: a short-stay Schengen visa cannot be extended for stays beyond 90 days; to stay longer you must apply for a residence permit (study, work, or family reunification) via the official process before or after arrival as appropriate; do not rely on extensions at the border.
