China citizens need a Schengen visa (short-stay, Type C) to visit the Netherlands — apply via the Netherlands embassy/consulate or Visa Application Centre; typical adult visa fee is €80, processing around 15 days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least two blank pages.
  • Schengen visa application form: Schengen visa application form completed and signed.
  • Financial proof: bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds to cover your stay; payslips or an employer letter; if someone else is funding, a sponsorship letter.
  • Accommodation and travel: hotel reservations for the entire stay or invitation letter from your host; round-trip flight reservation or travel itinerary.
  • Photo requirements: two recent color passport photos (35x45 mm) on a white background; taken within the last 6 months; head centered; comply with background and size rules.
  • Biometrics: yes, you must provide biometric fingerprints at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) unless you already provided biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months.
  • Travel health insurance: proof of travel medical insurance covering at least 30,000 EUR for medical emergencies and repatriation in the entire Schengen area, valid for the duration of your stay; provide policy number and insurer details.

  • Long-stay (study/work): Official name: MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) for study or work; MVV allows entry within a 3-month window; after arrival you apply for a residence permit; Approximate fee: around 174 EUR for the MVV (subject to change) plus separate residence permit costs.

How to apply

  • How to apply for a sticker visa: Complete the Schengen visa application form and collect all required documents; book an appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in China; attend biometrics collection at VAC; submit your documents and pay the visa fee plus VAC service charge; wait for the decision and receive your passport with the visa sticker if approved.
  • How approval arrives: If approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker; if additional information is needed, you may be asked to provide extra documents.

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply as early as possible: Start the process at least 15 days before travel; ideally 3-4 weeks to account for processing and peak periods.
  • Common rejection reasons for Chinese applicants: incomplete documents or incorrect information; insufficient funds or lack of proof of funds; travel itinerary not matching purpose; missing travel medical insurance; lack of ties to home country or intent to return.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: In China, most applicants submit via the Visa Application Centre (VAC) operated by VFS Global and provide biometrics; check the official Netherlands page for your specific city.
  • Travel advisories: Check current Netherlands government travel advisories and any bilateral notes for travel from China; ensure all documents meet the latest requirements.
  • Extension options inside Netherlands: Short-stay Schengen visas cannot be extended within the Netherlands beyond 90 days; long-stay stays require a residence permit (IND) and must be arranged before or during entry into the Netherlands.
