What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from the Schengen area, be issued within the last 10 years, and have at least two blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form must be completed online via utl.is and printed, then signed by the applicant.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 3 months showing funds to cover the trip. A practical guideline is to demonstrate at least EUR 95 per day of stay plus return travel costs; provide payslips or other steady income if applicable.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Hotel bookings or an official invitation letter from a host in Iceland, plus a round-trip flight reservation or itinerary.
  • Photo spec: Two recent passport photos, 35x45 mm, white background, full face, taken within the last 6 months; no tinted glasses or head coverings unless required for medical reasons.
  • Biometrics: Yes, biometrics are required and collected at the visa application center; an appointment is usually necessary. If you have provided biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, you may not need to repeat them in some cases.
  • Travel health insurance: Proof of travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR for the entire Schengen area and the full duration of stay.

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) — Official name: Schengen visa for short stay; Purpose: tourism, business, visiting family or friends, short courses. Validity: up to 90 days in a 180-day period; Entries: single or multiple depending on the consulate decision; Approx. fee: EUR 80.
  • Short-stay Schengen visa for business (Type C) — Official name: Schengen visa for business; Same validity, entries, and fee as above.
  • Short-stay visa for visiting family or friends (Type C) — Official name: Schengen visa for visiting; Same validity, entries, and fee as above.
  • Short-stay study or training visa (Type C) — Official name: Schengen visa for study/training; Same validity, entries, and fee as above.
  • National long-stay visa (Type D) — Official name: Icelandic national visa; For residence, work, or studies longer than 90 days. Validity and entries are determined by the issuing authority; Approx. fee: EUR 180.

How to apply

  • How to apply online: Go to utl.is to create an account, complete the Schengen visa application form, upload/attach required documents, and submit.
  • How to apply: Sticker visa (non e-visa): After submitting online, book an appointment at the Icelandic embassy/consulate or its authorized visa center in your jurisdiction, attend the appointment with original documents, biometrics, and passport, and pay the visa fee plus any service charges.
  • Visa on arrival: Not available for Chinese citizens traveling to Iceland; applications must be submitted in advance.
  • Documents checklist (at appointment): 1) Passport with at least 3 months validity after planned departure and two blank pages; 2) Printed and signed Schengen visa application form; 3) Two passport photos; 4) Travel insurance certificate; 5) Bank statements (last 3 months); 6) Proof of accommodation; 7) Round-trip flight reservation; 8) Proof of ties to home country (employment letter, scholastic enrollment, property, etc.); 9) Any additional documents requested by the embassy or consulate.

  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants specifically: insufficient funds or unclear financial proof; lack of travel health insurance meeting 30,000 EUR minimum; incomplete or inconsistent documentation; not showing strong ties to home country; inadequate accommodation proofs; inconsistent travel plans.

  • Extension options inside Iceland: Extensions of a Schengen short-stay visa are rarely granted; if you need a longer stay, you should depart before expiry and apply for a national long-stay (Type D) visa or residence permit through the appropriate Icelandic authorities; plans for extension should be discussed with the Directorate of Immigration if you believe you may qualify.
