What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of exit from the Schengen area; issued within the last 10 years; should have at least two blank pages.
  • Specific forms: Schengen visa application form (completed and signed). If applying for a long-stay national visa (D), use the Hungarian national visa form. For minors, provide parental consent and, if applicable, birth certificate.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements for the last 3 months showing funds to cover your stay; payroll slips; sponsorship letter if someone else covers the trip; travel insurance receipts.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel booking or host invitation letter) and a round-trip flight reservation or travel itinerary.
  • Photo spec: Recent color passport photo (35x45 mm); white background; full-face; not older than 6 months; no glasses with tinted lenses; head coverings allowed only for medical or religious reasons with proper documentation.
  • Biometrics: Yes, biometrics data must be submitted at the visa application center unless you have a valid Schengen biometrics record within the last 59 months; you will need to appear in person for fingerprints and photo.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR for the entire Schengen area and for the duration of stay, including medical expenses and repatriation.

  • Family reunification (D) – Official name: Hungarian national visa (D) for family reunification; Validity: per approved residence purpose; Entry: multiple; Approx fee: 80 EUR.

Application process

  • How to apply: Hungary currently uses sticker visas (Schengen Type C) or national D visas; there is no general online e-visa for Chinese citizens. Apply via the Hungarian Embassy/Consulate in China or through the official Konzuli Szolgálat portal which will direct you to the applicable application center (often a VFS Global service point).
  • How to apply: How to submit documents: Book an appointment through the official portal, prepare all required documents (see sections above), and submit in person at the designated visa center or embassy/consulate. Biometrics are collected at the submission center if required.
  • Documentation checklist: Bring the passport, completed application form, photos, travel itinerary, proof of funds, travel medical insurance, accommodation proof, flight reservation, invitation/ sponsorship letters as applicable, and any study/employment documents for D visas.

  • Standard processing time: Generally up to 15 calendar days from the date of application; in peak periods or for certain cases, processing can extend up to 60 days.
  • Express/priority option: Some centers may offer expedited processing at additional cost where available; check the official portal or with the visa center for availability and fees.

Tips for China travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Plan to apply at least 15 days before travel; ideally 3–4 weeks ahead to accommodate processing and any additional documents.
  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants specifically: Incomplete or inconsistent documentation; insufficient proof of funds or unclear funds sources; travel purpose not clearly supported (missing itinerary or invitation letter for business/family visits); travel insurance not meeting 30,000 EUR coverage; lack of ties to China (job, family, property) to demonstrate return intention; missing or incorrectly translated documents; missing biometrics or failed appointment scheduling.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Some applicants use the official visa service centers (e.g., VFS Global) for appointment scheduling and document checking; others may apply directly at the Hungary Embassy/Consulate; verify current procedures on the official Konzuli Szolgálat page and contact the center for accepted pathways.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Always check the official Hungary Consular Service site and the Hungarian MFA travel advisories, as well as your local Chinese travel advisories, for any updated entry rules, health requirements, or temporary restrictions.
  • Extension options inside Hungary: Short-stay visas (Type C) cannot simply be extended in most cases; for longer stays you must apply for a national D visa or permit appropriate to your purpose (studies, work, family reunification) and, if already in Hungary, contact the competent immigration authority (Office of Immigration and Nationality) for available options and timelines.
