What you need

  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide confirmed hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a host in Hong Kong, plus a return or onward travel itinerary.
  • Photo spec: One recent colour passport-style photo (not older than 6 months) sized 50 mm x 50 mm with a white background.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not routinely required at submission for HK visa applications; if requested, you will be directed by the Visa Application Centre.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for entry to Hong Kong; recommended for general travel safety.

Application process

  • How to apply: Hong Kong does not offer an online e-visa facility for Mainland PRC passport holders. Paper-based applications are submitted to the Hong Kong Immigration Department or through designated Hong Kong Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Mainland China. Use the Hong Kong Immigration Department official guidance at https://www.immd.gov.hk/eng/faq/immigration-clearance.html. Steps:
  • Determine your visa category and prepare documents listed in the visa guidance.
  • Complete the Hong Kong Visa Application Form VAF1 and attach all supporting documents.
  • Submit your application to the appropriate VAC in Mainland China or directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Pay the visa fee as instructed by the centre or ImmD.
  • Wait for processing, typically about 4–6 weeks; some complex cases may take longer. The decision is issued by the ImmD and, if approved, a visa label will be placed in your passport or the approval will be communicated for collection.
  • If approved, collect your passport with the visa label from the VAC or ImmD, then travel to Hong Kong as permitted.
  • Visa on arrival: Not available for Mainland PRC passport holders. Sticker visa (paper-based) applications: Use the VAC or ImmD; fees and timelines are as stated. Interview: May be required in rare cases.
  • Visa-free entry: Not applicable for Mainland PRC passport holders for general visits; a visa/entry permit is required unless you fall under a specific exempt category as defined by ImmD.

  • Visa fee: HKD 190 (approx USD 24). VAC/VAC-related service fees (for processing at VACs) vary by centre; typically around USD 25–40. Total cost: approximately HKD 190 plus VAC service charge. Standard processing time: about 4–6 weeks; express or priority processing is generally not widely offered to Mainland PRC applicants, but some VACs may offer expedited services at extra cost depending on location. Check with the specific VAC for options and current fees.

Tips for China travelers

  • Apply well in advance: start at least 6–8 weeks before planned travel; peak periods can take longer.
  • Common rejection reasons (Mainland PRC applicants): incomplete application or missing documents; mismatch between stated travel purpose and documents; insufficient funds or weak proof of funds; incorrect or inconsistent personal data (name, date of birth) on documents; lack of hotel bookings or host address; non-compliance with immigration requirements.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct ImmD: For HK visa applications, use official Hong Kong Immigration Department channels or official VACs in Mainland China; avoid non-authorised intermediaries claiming guaranteed approvals.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Check Hong Kong SAR Government travel advisories and ensure you meet entry requirements before departure; health or security measures can change with little notice.
  • Extension options inside Hong Kong: If you need to extend your stay as a visitor, you must apply to the Hong Kong Immigration Department before your current permission expires; extensions are granted at ImmD discretion and are not guaranteed; extensions lengths are typically limited and considered on a case-by-case basis.
