Costa Rica Visa for China Citizens 2026

Chinese citizens require a Costa Rica visa to visit; apply through the official Migration Authority portal (https://www.migracion.go.cr/) or the Costa Rica diplomatic mission in China; typical processing is about 2–4 weeks and visas are issued as a single-entry Tourist visa up to 90 days (other categories available).

What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay in Costa Rica.
  • Specific forms: Visa application form (Solicitud de Visa) available on migracion.go.cr and at the Costa Rica embassy/consulate; complete and sign.
  • Financial proof: Provide bank statements or other evidence showing access to funds of at least USD 100 per day of stay; for example a 14-day trip should show at least USD 1,400. Documents should be issued within 1–3 months of your application and be in USD or have a clearly stated equivalent in local currency.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide confirmed hotel bookings or invitation letter; provide a return or onward airline ticket.
  • Photo spec: Two recent passport photos (2x2 inches / 51x51 mm) with a plain white background; photos must be clear, full-face, no hats or sunglasses.
  • Biometrics: Biometric data may be collected at the consulate during your visa appointment; not all applicants will be required.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel health insurance is strongly recommended; it should cover medical expenses and emergency evacuation; no minimum amount is published by migracion.go.cr, but plans that meet international standards are advised.

  • Business visa (Visa de Negocios): Official name: Visa de Negocios; Validez: Hasta 90 días por entrada; Entradas: Single-entry; Fee: USD 60.
  • Student visa (Visa de Estudiantes): Official name: Visa de Estudiantes; Validez: Dura la vigencia del programa académico; Entradas: Multiple-entry possible; Fee: USD 60.
  • Work visa (Visa de Trabajo): Official name: Visa de Trabajo; Validez: Hasta 1 año, con posibilidad de renovación; Entradas: Multiple-entry; Fee: USD 60.

How to apply

  • Submit your application and documents to the Costa Rica diplomatic mission that handles China (the Embassy/Consulate in Beijing, Guangzhou, or Shanghai, or the mission designated for your area). Check migracion.go.cr and the respective embassy site for submission instructions.
  • Pay the visa fee (usually USD 60). Payment methods vary by mission; confirm whether cash in USD or local currency, bank transfer, or card is accepted.
  • If an interview is required, attend at the scheduled time and provide biometric data if requested.
  • Processing time is typically 2–4 weeks; some cases may take longer (up to 6 weeks). The embassy/consulate will notify you when a decision is ready; you will collect your passport.
  • If approved, your passport will be stamped with the visa. On entry to Costa Rica, carry your passport, visa, proof of funds, accommodation, and return ticket; border control may request these documents.
  • After approval, ensure you comply with entry conditions and keep a copy of your visa and supporting documents for your trip.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 60; Local currency equivalent (CRC) around 36,000; payable at the consulate.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for Costa Rica visas processed through official diplomatic missions in China (no third-party submission as per current policy).
  • Total cost estimate: About USD 60 plus minor ancillary fees if any (courier, document handling).
  • Standard processing time: 2–4 weeks (10–20 business days).
  • Express/priority option: Not offered by the official mission; check with the consulate if any expedited options exist.

Tips for China travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: At least 6–8 weeks before travel; allow more time during peak travel periods.
  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants specifically: Incomplete documentation; insufficient funds; mismatch between travel purpose and documents; passport validity shorter than required; inconsistencies in application details; prior visa refusals without satisfactory explanations.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Costa Rica visas are processed through official Costa Rica diplomatic missions; verify the current channel via migracion.go.cr and the embassy site; there is no guaranteed VFS/BLS channel for China.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Check current travel advisories from both Chinese and Costa Rican authorities; ensure you meet any health or vaccination requirements and stay updated on policy changes.
  • Extension options inside Costa Rica: Tourist visas may be extended up to an additional 90 days by applying at the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería before the current visa expires; extensions are subject to approval and fees.
