What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Canada and for at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave.
  • Specific forms: Apply using IMM 5257 (Application for Temporary Resident Visa) online or on paper; include IMM 5645 (Family Information) and, if required, Schedule 1 for criminality; for online applications forms are completed in MyCIC.
  • Financial proof: Provide documents showing you can support yourself during your stay (bank statements for the last 3–6 months, pay stubs, or evidence of assets). There is no fixed minimum amount; funds should cover travel, living costs, and return.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide proof of where you will stay in Canada (hotel bookings or invitation letter) and proof of onward or return travel.
  • Photo specifications: Two passport-style photos (35 mm x 45 mm) taken within the last six months with a plain white background.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are required; you will submit at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in China and pay the biometrics fee of CAD 85 as part of your application.
  • Travel health insurance: Not required for visa approval, but recommended to cover medical costs during your stay.

Visa types

Application process

  • How to apply online: Create an online account in MyCIC (or use a Sign-In Partner/GCKey), complete IMM 5257 and any required forms, upload documents, and pay CAD 100 for the visa plus CAD 85 biometrics.
  • Biometrics: After submitting your online application, you will receive instructions to visit a VAC in China to provide biometrics; the CAD 85 biometrics fee is payable at that time.

  • Interview: An interview request may be issued at a VAC or embassy in some cases.
