What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of entry into Brazil, and you should have at least two blank visa pages.
  • Specific forms: Complete the Formulário de Solicitação de Visto online on the gov.br portal; there is no DS-160 for Brazil.
  • Financial proof: Provide bank statements or other proof of funds showing you can cover your stay; a practical guideline is funds equivalent to at least 60 USD per day of planned stay (for example, 7 days ≈ 420 USD) from the last 3–6 months.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide hotel bookings or a host invitation letter, plus a round-trip or onward ticket.
  • Photo spec: One recent color photo, 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months; head uncovered; no hats or sunglasses; in color.
  • Biometrics: Yes. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are collected at the consulate appointment where required.
  • Travel health insurance: Recommended for all visa categories; coverage should include Brazil and medical evacuation; a suggested minimum is around 30,000 USD.

  • Student visa: Official name: Visto de Estudo; Validity: duration of study (issued for the course length, often up to 1 year per issue and renewable); Multiple entries: Yes; Approximate fee: USD 110 (BRL ~ 580).
  • Work visa: Official name: Visto de Trabalho; Validity: up to 1 year per issue and renewable; Max stay per entry: 90 days initially (extension possible); Multiple entries: Yes; Approximate fee: USD 180 (BRL ~ 945).

Application process

Tips for China travelers

  • Common rejection reasons for China applicants: Incomplete or inconsistent online form data; missing or insufficient financial proof; lack of a clear travel plan; missing invitation letter for Business or study documents; passport problems (insufficient validity or blank pages); inconsistent travel history or purpose of visit; missing accommodation or return ticket details.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Some Brazilian consulates use external visa service providers (e.g., VFS Global) for document intake; others process directly. Check the consulate’s official page for the current channel and appointment process.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Monitor official travel advisories from both the Brazilian government and the Chinese government; ensure there are no entry restrictions or health requirements changing before departure.
  • Extension options inside Brazil: Extensions of stay are possible in some cases with the Federal Police before your visa expires, but approvals are not guaranteed and limits apply. Typically, extensions are limited and may require leaving Brazil for a visa re-entry in some situations.
