United States Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Required

South African citizens need a B1/B2 visitor visa for the United States — apply via the DS-160 form and attend an interview at the US Embassy or Consulate; fee USD 185, processing depends on interview wait times.

Guide last updated September 19, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay (recommended standard)
  • DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application form, completed and confirmation page printed
  • Financial proof: bank statements, payslips, and evidence of stable employment or business ownership in South Africa
  • Proof of strong ties to South Africa (property, family, employment letter) rather than fixed accommodation/return ticket documents, which are usually only discussed at interview
  • Digital photo: 2x2 inch (51x51mm), white background, taken within the last 6 months, uploaded with the DS-160
  • Biometrics: fingerprint scans and photo captured at the visa interview at the US Embassy in Pretoria or Consulate General in Cape Town/Durban
  • Travel health insurance: not required for a B1/B2 visa but recommended given high US medical costs

Visa types

  • B1/B2 Visitor visa (business/tourism) - up to 10 years validity, multiple entry, each stay limited to up to 6 months as determined by CBP on arrival, fee USD 185
  • F-1 Student visa - validity tied to course/SEVIS record (duration of status), fee USD 185 plus SEVIS I-901 fee USD 350
  • H-1B Specialty Occupation work visa - up to 3 years initial validity, extendable to 6, fee USD 190 plus employer petition costs
  • J-1 Exchange Visitor visa - validity matches program dates on the DS-2019, fee USD 185

How to apply

  • Complete the DS-160 form online at ceac.state.gov and print the confirmation page
  • Pay the MRV application fee, USD 185, via the designated bank in South Africa
  • Schedule an interview appointment through the US Visa Information Service website for Pretoria, Cape Town or Durban
  • Gather documents: passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo, fee receipt, financial and employment evidence, prior US visa if any
  • Attend the in-person interview; fingerprints taken on arrival at the embassy/consulate
  • If approved, passport is couriered back with the visa within a few business days; if refused, reasons are given under INA 214(b) or a similar provision

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 185, non-refundable regardless of outcome, for B1/B2
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee, applications go directly through the US Embassy/Consulate system, though a small courier fee (approx ZAR 150) may apply for passport return
  • Total estimated cost: approx USD 185-210 including courier
  • Standard processing: interview wait times fluctuate, historically ranging from a few weeks to 2-3 months in Pretoria, Cape Town or Durban; once interviewed, issuance typically takes 3-5 working days
  • No official express service exists for B1/B2, though Interview Waiver eligibility for prior visa holders can bypass wait times

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Check current interview wait times on the US Embassy South Africa website and book as early as possible, sometimes 2-3 months ahead
  • Common refusal reason is failure to demonstrate strong, non-immigrant intent: insufficient ties to South Africa, vague travel plans, or inconsistent employment history
  • There is no VFS/BLS middleman for US visas, all steps go directly through the State Department's CEAC system and the embassy/consulate
  • Previous US visa refusals or overstays elsewhere can affect scrutiny; be prepared to explain any prior immigration history
  • Visa extensions or status changes are filed with USCIS from inside the US using Form I-539, not through the embassy
