Visa Required

South African citizens need a UK Standard Visitor visa before travel; the fee is GBP 115, applied for online via gov.uk with biometrics at a VFS Global centre, and standard processing takes about 3 weeks.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full intended duration of the visit, with at least 1 blank page
  • Completed online visa application via gov.uk (the old paper VAF1A form has been replaced by the online application)
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements for the last 6 months, payslips)
  • Proof of employment or study in South Africa (employer/institution letter)
  • Proof of accommodation and travel itinerary in the UK
  • Passport photo: 45x35mm, light grey/cream background
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at a VFS Global visa application centre (Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban)
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for visits, but recommended

Visa types

  • Standard Visitor visa: tourism, visiting family, business meetings; up to 6 months per visit, multiple entry, valid 2, 5 or 10 years depending on fee paid
  • Marriage Visitor visa: for those intending to marry/form a civil partnership in the UK, valid 6 months, single entry
  • Permitted Paid Engagement visa: for specific professional engagements, up to 1 month
  • Transit visa: for travelers passing through a UK airport to a third country

How to apply

  • Complete the application on gov.uk and pay the fee online
  • Book a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in South Africa (Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg)
  • Submit passport, photo, financial and supporting documents at the appointment
  • Standard decision time: approximately 3 weeks (15 working days) from the appointment date
  • Priority service (5 working days) and Super Priority service (next day) are available for an extra fee
  • Decision and passport are returned via VFS Global courier or collected in person

  • 2-year multiple-entry visa: GBP 432
  • 5-year multiple-entry visa: GBP 771
  • 10-year multiple-entry visa: GBP 963
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately ZAR 1,400-1,600 on top of the visa fee
  • Priority service (5 working days): additional GBP 500
  • Super Priority service (next working day): additional GBP 1,000
  • Standard processing: about 3 weeks

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 6-8 weeks before travel to allow for appointment availability and processing time
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, weak ties to South Africa, inconsistent travel history explanations
  • VFS Global centres get busy in school holiday periods - book your appointment early
  • Consider the multi-year visa if you plan to visit the UK more than once in the next few years - it is cost-effective
  • There is no extension process for Standard Visitor visas from inside the UK except in limited exceptional circumstances
