  • Schengen Type C Family/Friends Visit visa - requires a formal invitation from the host
  • National Type D visa - for work or study, requires cantonal permit approval first and is processed separately, often taking several months

How to apply

  • Submit the application through the VFS Global Switzerland visa application centre in South Africa

  • Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: CHF 80 (~ZAR 1,650) for adults, CHF 40 for children 6-12, free under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately ZAR 500-600
  • Total estimated cost: around ZAR 2,200-2,300
  • Standard processing: 15 calendar days
  • No official fast-track option; optional VFS courier/SMS services add convenience only

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply 4-6 weeks ahead of travel
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds, vague itinerary, weak ties to South Africa, missing or inadequate insurance
  • If visiting multiple Schengen countries, apply at the consulate of the country where you spend the most nights, or the first point of entry if time is split evenly
  • Switzerland follows Schengen rules but applications are handled by SEM, not an EU body
  • Extensions inside Switzerland are rare and only granted by the cantonal migration office for serious unforeseen reasons
