  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at the VFS Global application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C Tourist visa: single or multiple entry, up to 90 days within 180 days
  • Schengen Type C Business visa: requires an invitation letter from a Portuguese company
  • Schengen Type C Family visit visa: supported by a Termo de Responsabilidade from the host, which can reduce the required proof of funds

  • Book an appointment online with VFS Global Portugal (centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban)
  • Submit documents and biometrics at the centre
  • Pay the visa fee and VFS service fee at the appointment
  • Standard processing takes around 15 calendar days
  • Collect your passport from the centre once a decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: €90 for adults, €40 for children aged 6-12, free under 6
  • VFS service fee: approximately R450 in addition to the visa fee
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, extending up to 45 days in exceptional cases
  • No official express option is offered

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply well ahead of your trip, ideally 4-6 weeks before departure
  • Portugal's consulate commonly requests clear proof of return travel and day-to-day funds — keep bank statements organised
  • Keep hotel bookings refundable until your visa is granted, in case of delays
  • A Portuguese Schengen visa allows onward travel throughout the Schengen area for its validity period
  • Family visit applications move faster with a properly notarised Termo de Responsabilidade from the host
