Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Papua New Guinea
  • Completed online eTA application via the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority eTA portal
  • Scanned copy of your passport bio page uploaded during the application
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) for the duration of your stay
  • Digital passport-size photo uploaded as part of the online application
  • Biometrics are not collected in advance; standard immigration checks occur on arrival
  • Travel health insurance strongly recommended given limited healthcare infrastructure in many areas

Visa types

  • Tourist eTA: single entry, up to 60 days stay, fee approximately USD 100
  • Business eTA: same online application stream, requires an invitation letter from a PNG-registered company, similar fee
  • Conventional visa (non-eTA): still available via application to a PNG diplomatic mission for categories not covered by the eTA system, such as long-stay work visas
  • Transit visa: for short stopovers, typically a separate simplified category with lower fee where applicable

How to apply online

  • Register and complete the application form on the official PNG eTA portal (immigration.gov.pg)
  • Upload your passport bio page, photo and supporting documents (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Pay the eTA fee online by card
  • Receive your eTA approval electronically via email, linked to your passport number
  • Print or save a digital copy of the approval to present alongside your passport on arrival
  • Apply at least 2-3 weeks before travel to allow processing time

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist eTA fee: approximately USD 100 (~R1,850)
  • Business eTA fee: similar range, sometimes slightly higher depending on validity
  • Standard processing time: a few working days to a week, though applying earlier is recommended during busy periods
  • No widely advertised express service; most applications are processed within the standard window
  • Total estimated cost: R1,900-R2,200 including incidental card charges

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel to leave margin for any document requests or system delays
  • Common rejection reasons: blurry passport scan, mismatched travel dates, incomplete accommodation details
  • Confirm your eTA approval email details match your passport exactly before departure to avoid boarding issues
  • Check current travel advisories for Papua New Guinea, as security conditions vary significantly by region, particularly in parts of the Highlands
  • Extensions of stay can be arranged through the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority before your eTA-granted period expires
