Nicaragua Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Free

South African passport holders can enter Nicaragua visa-free for up to 90 days as part of the CA-4 Central America tourist arrangement.

Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • No visa or pre-approval required for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward or return travel may be requested at the border
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay (not routinely checked but can be requested)
  • No specific entry form beyond the standard immigration arrival card issued on the plane or at the border
  • No biometrics collection for visa-free entry
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa is needed for South African tourists for stays up to 90 days under the CA-4 Border Control Agreement (covering Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala as a single tourist zone)
  • Business visitors staying under 90 days without local employment also use the visa-free entry
  • Longer stays or work require a residency permit or specific visa applied for through Nicaragua's Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería, which is a separate, longer process

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days total within the CA-4 zone (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala combined, not 90 days per country)
  • No work authorized on a visa-free tourist entry
  • At the border or airport, present your passport and a completed arrival/exit form; immigration will stamp your passport with the permitted stay
  • Extensions beyond 90 days require an application at a Nicaraguan immigration office before the visa-free period expires, subject to approval and a fee
  • Keep your stamped entry slip, as it may be requested on departure

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee since no visa is required
  • A tourist card fee of approximately USD 10 is sometimes collected on arrival at land borders (airports may fold this into airport taxes)
  • No processing time since entry is granted on arrival
  • Extension fees at a migration office are typically USD 20-40 depending on the extra days requested
  • No express or priority option applicable, as there is no pre-arrival visa process

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Carry small amounts of US dollars in cash for any tourist card or incidental entry fees
  • Remember the 90-day limit is shared across all CA-4 countries if you plan to also visit Honduras, El Salvador or Guatemala
  • Keep your onward ticket details accessible, as immigration officers sometimes ask for proof of departure
  • There are no special bilateral notes between South Africa and Nicaragua affecting this arrangement
  • If you plan to overstay or convert to a different status, start the extension process at a migration office well before day 90 to avoid fines or exit issues
