  • Digital passport photo meeting INZ specifications (uploaded during online application)

  • Wait for a decision, delivered electronically as an eVisa linked to your passport number
  • Apply at least 6-8 weeks before your planned travel date

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: NZD 211 (~R2,300) for online applications
  • IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy): NZD 35, paid alongside the visa fee
  • VFS biometrics service fee: approximately R500-R700 if biometrics are required
  • Standard processing time: 3-6 weeks depending on volume and completeness of application
  • No official priority/express service for standard visitor visas from South Africa
  • Total estimated cost: R3,000-R3,500 including biometrics and levy

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply well in advance (2 months) since South African applications are sometimes referred for additional verification
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds shown, unclear ties to South Africa (job, property), incomplete travel itinerary
  • Biometrics enrolment via VFS Global adds extra lead time — book this appointment as soon as you submit your online application
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria: be ready to show strong reasons to return home (employment letter, family ties, property)
  • Extensions within New Zealand are possible via INZ but must be applied for before your current visa expires
