Visa Required

Guide last updated September 18, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Proof of accommodation for the full stay (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements for the last 3 months, approx. EUR 55-100 per day depending on accommodation type)
  • Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area, minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at the VFS Global Netherlands application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Visa Type C (short-stay, tourism/business/family visit): single, double or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 90
  • Airport transit visa (Type A): rarely needed for South Africans transiting Schengen airports without leaving the transit area
  • National long-stay visa (Type D): required for work, study, or family reunification, applied for directly at the Netherlands Consulate with additional supporting documents

How to apply

  • Book an appointment at the VFS Global Netherlands visa application centre in South Africa (Pretoria, Cape Town, or Durban)
  • Submit the completed application, passport, photos, and all supporting documents, and provide biometrics
  • Pay the Schengen visa fee plus the VFS service fee (approx. ZAR 450-550) at the centre
  • Applications are forwarded to the Netherlands Consulate for a decision
  • Standard processing: 15 calendar days, which can extend to 30-45 days if additional documents are requested

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (approx. ZAR 1,800) for adults; EUR 45 for children aged 6-12
  • VFS service fee: approximately ZAR 450-550
  • Total estimated cost: ZAR 2,300-2,500
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days
  • Priority lounge services are available at some VFS centres for an added fee but do not guarantee a faster consulate decision

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply 4-6 weeks before travel, since VFS appointment slots book up quickly, especially before the European summer and December holidays
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient bank balance history, weak proof of ties to South Africa, or an inconsistent travel itinerary
  • Apply through the Netherlands if it is the main destination or the country where you will spend the most nights on a multi-country Schengen trip
  • Extensions inside the Schengen area are rarely granted except for emergencies and must be requested at the local immigration office (IND) before the visa expires
