Mauritius Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Free

South African citizens can enter Mauritius visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism purposes, with no advance application needed beyond a valid passport, return ticket and proof of accommodation.

Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full duration of your intended stay (Mauritius does not require extra validity beyond your departure date, but airlines often ask for at least 6 months)
  • No visa application form required for stays up to 90 days
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or address of host)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay, occasionally checked at immigration
  • No biometrics collected on entry for visa-exempt visitors beyond the standard passport scan
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory for entry

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt tourist entry: automatic on arrival for South African passport holders, single or multiple entries within the 90-day window, no fee
  • Premium Travel Visa: optional longer-stay permit (up to 1 year, renewable) for remote workers, retirees or long-stay visitors who want to remain beyond 90 days, applied for online in advance
  • Occupation/Work Permit: separate application required for anyone taking up employment, not covered by the visa-free entry

Entry conditions

  • South African citizens may stay visa-free for up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business meetings (not paid employment)
  • On arrival you must show your passport, a completed immigration/disembarkation card, your return ticket and proof of accommodation
  • Visitors may not take up local employment under the visa-exempt entry - a separate work permit is required for that
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are possible by applying to the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis before the initial period expires, subject to approval
  • Multiple visits are allowed, but immigration officers may query frequent back-to-back stays that effectively amount to residence

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the standard 90-day visa-exempt entry
  • No VFS or BLS processing involved since no visa application is needed
  • Total cost: USD 0 for entry itself, aside from the standard Mauritius airport departure/passenger fee usually built into airline tickets
  • If applying for the Premium Travel Visa instead, the online application is free of charge and typically processed within a few working days
  • Extension of stay applications at the Immigration Office are usually processed within a few days to two weeks

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Carry proof of your return flight and accommodation details printed or easily accessible, as immigration officers do spot-check these
  • Because the entry is visa-free, there is no rejection process at a consulate - any issues arise only at the port of entry, usually due to missing onward tickets
  • Apply for the Premium Travel Visa in advance if you plan to stay beyond 90 days, rather than attempting repeated back-to-back visa-free entries
  • Mauritius has a South African-friendly tourism sector, but still carry proof of accommodation and a return ticket to avoid any delay at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport
  • Register with the local tourism office or your hotel on arrival if staying long-term, as this can help if you later apply for an extension
